Misfire During Start Cylinder 5

Brand: BMW

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Failed or weak ignition coil on cylinder 5
  • Worn or fouled spark plug in cylinder 5
  • Fuel injector stuck, clogged, or electrically faulty for cylinder 5
  • Low compression or mechanical problem (valve, piston, rings) on cylinder 5
  • Wiring harness or connector fault to coil or injector (open, short, poor ground)
  • Low battery/insufficient cranking voltage

Symptoms

  • Hard or rough cranking and/or extended cranking time
  • Engine starts roughly or misfires immediately after start
  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated and P1350 logged
  • Reduced engine power until engine warms or misfire clears
  • Possible fuel smell, increased emissions or stalling after start

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes and note freeze-frame data (engine rpm, voltage, temp)
  • Check live data: cylinder-specific misfire counters and contribution to engine speed
  • Inspect battery voltage during cranking (should be >9.5–10V under load)
  • Visually inspect coil, spark plug, injector and wiring/connector for cylinder 5
  • Measure ignition coil primary and secondary resistance and compare to spec
  • Swap coil (and/or injector) with another cylinder to see if fault follows

Signal parameters

  • Cylinder 5 misfire count and misfire rate (events/min or counts)
  • Contribution to engine speed from cylinder 5 (deg/sec or percentage)
  • Battery voltage during cranking (V)
  • Ignition coil primary resistance (ohms) and secondary resistance (kΩ) — compare to OEM spec
  • Injector pulse width (ms) and injector current waveform
  • Fuel rail pressure (bar or psi) during cranking and start

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and freeze‑frame; record engine temp, rpm, voltage at fault occurrence
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce the fault with vehicle cold and during cranking
  3. Visually inspect coil pack, spark plug and injector (cylinder 5) for damage, oil or deposits; replace spark plug if suspect
  4. Swap ignition coil between cylinder 5 and another cylinder; restart to see if P1350 or misfire follows the coil
  5. If coil swap follows, replace coil. If not, swap injector to isolate injector fault.
  6. Check coil primary/secondary resistance and compare to specifications; test for spark with proper tools while cranking (careful of high voltage and safety)
  7. Use a noid light or scope to verify injector pulse and continuity; check connector pins for corrosion or loose fit
  8. Perform compression or leak-down test on cylinder 5 to rule out mechanical causes
  9. Check battery condition and cranking voltage; ensure starter and charging system are healthy
  10. Inspect crank and cam sensor signals and timing if misfire is accompanied by related sensor codes or timing symptoms
  11. Repair identified faulty component(s), clear codes and verify repair with repeated cranking and short drive cycle to ensure no recurrence

Likely causes

  • Ignition coil failure for cylinder 5
  • Bad spark plug in cylinder 5
  • Injector electrical fault or clog at cylinder 5
  • Connector/circuit damage at coil or injector harness to cylinder 5
  • Low cranking voltage affecting ignition at start

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored DTC: Misfire during start detected on cylinder 5. MIL may be on. Fault may be intermittent or repeatable during cold start/cranking.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
