Ignition Coil Group 2 Control Circuit

Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in the coil group 2 control circuit
  • Faulty ignition coil(s) in group 2
  • Poor or corroded connector or pin at coil harness
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay supplying coil power
  • Poor ground or battery voltage supply to coils/ECM
  • Faulty ECM/ignition driver output

Symptoms

  • Check Engine lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Misfire(s) on one or more cylinders associated with coil group 2
  • Rough idle or hesitation under load
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Hard starting or stalling in some cases

What to check

  • Read stored codes and freeze frame data with a scan tool; note engine RPM, coolant temp and voltage at the time of failure
  • Check for related misfire codes (P030x) and coil-specific codes (P035x)
  • Visually inspect coil group 2 wiring, connectors and harness for damage, corrosion, heat damage or pin/terminal failure
  • Check fuses and relays that feed ignition coils
  • Backprobe coil group 2 connector with ignition off to verify power supply and ground presence
  • Measure battery voltage at coil connector while cranking/starting

Signal parameters

  • Expected coil primary voltage: near battery voltage at power supply (approx. 12V nominal; may vary 9–14V during cranking)
  • Coil primary resistance (typical range, vehicle dependent): ~0.2–3 Ω (consult OEM spec for exact value)
  • Coil secondary resistance (typical range, vehicle dependent): ~5 kΩ–15 kΩ (consult OEM spec)
  • Driver output behavior: switching (pulsed) grounding or pulsed supply from ECM timed to ignition events; pulse frequency increases with RPM
  • No continuity to battery when driver is inactive (no unintended short to B+) and no continuity to ground when inactive (no unintended short to ground)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve P1360 and any related codes, record freeze frame. Identify which cylinders or coils are included in "group 2" from vehicle service literature.
  2. Visually inspect coil group 2 harness, connectors and terminals for corrosion, bent pins, water, or physical damage.
  3. With ignition OFF, measure coil connector terminals: verify unswitched battery feed and ground circuits per wiring diagram. Check fuse/relay feeding coils.
  4. With a DVOM, measure coil primary resistance and compare to OEM specification. If out of range, replace the coil.
  5. Backprobe the coil control (driver) pin with a lab scope or scan-tool pattern while cranking/running. Verify driver pulses (voltage transitions) and compare waveform to a known-good channel or spec.
  6. Swap the suspect coil with a known-good coil of the same type (within the same group) and clear codes. If the code/misfire follows the coil, replace the coil. If it stays on the same cylinder group, suspect wiring/ECM.
  7. Check for short to battery or ground on the control wire (pin-to-pin continuity and resistance). Wiggle the harness to check for intermittent faults.
  8. If wiring is good and coil is known good, command the coil driver with a scan tool (if supported) and re-check waveform/response. If driver does not respond correctly, suspect ECM or driver transistor failure and follow OEM procedures for ECM testing/repair.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform a test drive to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Damaged ignition coil(s) in group 2
  • Open or shorted driver wire between ECM and coil group 2
  • Corroded/loose connector at coil pack
  • Failed ECM ignition driver transistor for group 2
