Cylinder of ignition coil activation failure 6

Causes

  • Faulty ignition coil for cylinder 6
  • Damaged wiring or poor connector at the coil (open/short/intermittent)
  • Missing or low power supply to the coil (fuse, relay, battery/charging issue)
  • Poor ground at engine harness or coil mounting
  • Faulty ECM/ignition driver transistor driving the coil
  • Intermittent CAN/ECM communications or software glitch

Symptoms

  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) / Check Engine light on
  • Rough idle or engine vibration, especially at idle
  • Reduced engine power or hesitation under load
  • Poor fuel economy and possible increased emissions
  • Stored misfire counters for cylinder 6 (P0306 may also be present)

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and live data; note engine rpm, coolant temp, and misfire counts
  • Check for related codes (e.g., misfire codes such as P0306)
  • Visually inspect coil, connector and wiring at cylinder 6 for damage, corrosion or oil contamination
  • Verify battery voltage and charging system (should be ~11–15 V during cranking and running)
  • Check fuses/relays that supply ignition coils
  • Swap coil 6 with another cylinder's coil (if coils are identical) to see if code follows the coil

Signal parameters

  • Battery supply voltage: typically ~11–15 V (while cranking/running)
  • Ignition coil primary resistance: typical range ~0.4–2.0 Ω (manufacturer spec required)
  • Ignition coil secondary resistance: typical range ~5–20 kΩ (manufacturer spec required)
  • Coil driver pulse width / dwell: varies with RPM — expect pulsed switching correlated with crankshaft position
  • Coil primary waveform: clean switching pulses with expected amplitude and return; no missing pulses on cylinder 6
  • Misfire counter for cylinder 6 should be checked in live data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Note whether P0306 (cylinder 6 misfire) is also present.
  2. Perform a visual inspection of coil, connector and wiring for cylinder 6. Repair obvious damage or corrosion.
  3. Swap the ignition coil from cylinder 6 with a known good coil on another cylinder. Clear codes and run engine. If the fault moves to the other cylinder, replace the coil.
  4. Check power and ground at the coil connector with a DVOM or scope. Verify constant battery supply and a solid ground reference while cranking/running.
  5. Measure coil primary and secondary resistances and compare to Land Rover specifications. Replace coil if out of spec.
  6. Back-probe the coil primary with an oscilloscope to verify the ECM is commanding pulses. Confirm pulse timing correlates with crankshaft position and that pulses are present for other cylinders.
  7. If no command pulse is present but wiring and coil are good, check wiring continuity from the coil connector to the ECM and inspect the ECM connector for damage.
  8. If wiring and coil are good and no external fault is found, consider ECM driver failure — consult manufacturer service information before replacing ECM (perform guided tests or module bench testing where applicable).
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform a road/test drive to confirm the fault does not return and misfire counters are normal.

Likely causes

  • Damaged coil harness connector or corroded pin at cylinder 6
  • Defective ignition coil on cylinder 6
  • Open/short in coil primary circuit (power/ground/driver)
  • Faulty ECM coil driver (less common)
