What to check

  • Back-probe the vent valve connector and observe voltage/ground while commanding the valve with a scan tool
  • Measure resistance of the vent valve solenoid with the connector disconnected
  • Perform continuity check from valve connector to PCM pins and to ground

Signal parameters

  • Connector supply voltage (key ON) — should be battery voltage or switched 12 V depending on design (typical ~11–13.5 V)
  • Control signal from PCM — open/ground switched or PWM/duty cycle depending on model (verify with factory data)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all current and pending codes and freeze frame data. Note engine and fuel system state during fault.
  2. Visually inspect vent valve, connector, wiring harness and EVAP hoses for damage, corrosion, pin push-out or contamination.
  3. Verify fuse(s) and any related power/ground circuits for continuity and correct voltage.
  4. With ignition ON, back-probe the vent valve connector: verify supply voltage and control signal from PCM (compare to OEM expected behavior).
  5. Disconnect the valve and measure DC resistance across the valve terminals. Compare to OEM specification. Infinite or very high resistance indicates open coil; very low near 0 Ω indicates short.
  6. Command the vent valve ON/OFF using a scan tool while watching voltage/ground and listening/feeling for valve actuation. If accessible, bench-test valve with appropriate test voltage to confirm operation.
  7. Check continuity from vent valve connector to PCM pins; inspect for intermittent faults by gently wiggling wiring while monitoring signal.
  8. If electrical and wiring checks are good but valve doesn’t actuate, replace vent valve and retest.
  9. If new valve also faults or wiring/PCM suspect, consult wiring diagram and perform circuit isolation testing; consider PCM driver test or module replacement only after confirming harness and component failures.
  10. Clear codes and perform a drive cycle or readiness test to confirm repair.
