Causes

  • Failed or sticking idle charge actuator mechanism
  • Faulty actuator position sensor or internal potentiometer
  • Open, shorted or corroded wiring/connectors to actuator
  • Obstruction or carbon build-up blocking actuator movement
  • Faulty Engine Control Module (ECM) or software fault
  • Related vacuum or intake leakage affecting actuator operation

Symptoms

  • Rough or unstable idle
  • High or low idle speed that is not corrected
  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Hesitation or stalling at idle or low throttle
  • Possible reduced charging/alternator-related idle control behavior

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and live data; confirm P1512 is active or logged
  • Visual inspection of actuator, harness and connector for damage or corrosion
  • Check for related stored codes (idle control/MAF/TP/charging system)
  • Manually operate actuator (if serviceable) to check movement and linkage
  • Perform wiggle test on connector/wiring while monitoring engine behavior or data

Signal parameters

  • Actuator supply voltage (typically 12 V with ignition ON)
  • Actuator ground continuity (near 0 ohms)
  • Position feedback voltage or resistance (varies by actuator design)
  • Command duty cycle/position request from ECM (%) or counts
  • Response time (ms) between command and position change

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Clear code, start engine and confirm code returns to verify repeatability.
  2. Record live data for actuator command and feedback while commanding idle changes (idle up/down) with scan tool.
  3. With ignition OFF, inspect connector pins for corrosion, bent pins or water ingress; repair as needed.
  4. Measure actuator supply voltage and ground at connector with ignition ON; verify proper battery voltage and good ground.
  5. Measure feedback/position signal at connector while operating actuator with scan tool; verify that feedback changes correspond to commands.
  6. If electrical tests are good but actuator does not move, remove and bench-test actuator (apply appropriate voltage per service manual) to confirm mechanical operation.
  7. Inspect intake and actuator mating surfaces for carbon build-up or mechanical blockage; clean or service as required.
  8. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connector, or actuator. After repair, clear codes and verify proper idle control and that the code does not return.
  9. If tests indicate correct actuator operation and wiring, consider ECM/firmware issues and consult technical service information before ECM replacement.

Likely causes

  • Actuator electrical connector loose, corroded or damaged
  • Actuator motor or gears mechanically seized
  • Broken or worn actuator linkage
  • Short or high resistance in actuator power/ground circuit
  • Contaminants (carbon/gum) preventing actuator travel

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Idle charge actuator (mechanical) malfunction detected. Check actuator circuit, position feedback and mechanical operation.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
