Causes

  • Faulty ESP ECU (internal fault or corrupted software)
  • Loss or corruption of CAN/LIN communication between ESP and sender module
  • Damaged or corroded connectors / wiring harness (open, short, high resistance)
  • Low or unstable battery / poor ground connection affecting module operation
  • Another control module sending incorrect or out-of-spec data
  • Interference from aftermarket electronics (alarms, remote starters, tracking units)

Symptoms

  • ESP/traction control warning lamp illuminated
  • ABS/ESP functions reduced or disabled (loss of stability control)
  • One or more communication-related DTCs stored in multiple modules
  • Possible drivability issues when ESP intervenes or when diagnostic conditions present
  • Intermittent operation of stability-related features

What to check

  • Read all stored DTCs and freeze frame data from ESP and other network modules
  • Check for related communication codes (U-codes) in other ECUs
  • Verify battery voltage at rest and under cranking; check main power and ground at ESP ECU
  • Visually inspect ESP ECU connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, bent pins or water ingress
  • Scan live CAN/LIN bus data for the expected messages and values from the sending module
  • Check for aftermarket devices connected to vehicle power or data buses

Signal parameters

  • CAN bus differential voltage: ~0.5 V to 2.5 V on each line when active (verify with scope)
  • Nominal CAN data rate specific to vehicle (e.g., 250 kbps or 500 kbps) — check for expected message frequency
  • Expected periodic message IDs and payloads from remote module (refer to OEM datalog/specs)
  • ESP ECU main supply voltage: battery nominal ~12–14.5 V
  • Ground continuity: low resistance (
  • Relevant sensor inputs used by ESP: wheel speed, yaw rate, lateral accel, steering angle should be within normal ranges

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs (ESP and other modules) and freeze frame data; note occurrence pattern (permanent/intermittent).
  2. Verify vehicle battery state of charge and charging system; ensure stable supply voltage to ECUs.
  3. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; observe if P1536 returns and whether it is permanent or intermittent.
  4. Inspect ESP ECU connector and wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, water ingress or poor pin contact; repair as required.
  5. Check power and ground at the ESP ECU with a multimeter; verify wiring continuity to battery and chassis ground.
  6. Use a diagnostic tool to monitor CAN bus traffic; verify expected messages are present, correct ID and frequency, and that the ESP receives valid payloads.
  7. If intermittent or noisy signals suspected, use an oscilloscope to inspect CAN differential waveform for noise, reflections, or bus-off conditions.
  8. If another module is the message source, test that module for correct operation and correct message content; repair or replace as indicated.
  9. Check for and remove any aftermarket devices that may interfere with communication; retest.
  10. If wiring and external modules check OK, consult OEM for ECU software updates or perform a reflash/reprogram of the ESP ECU per service procedure.
  11. If ECU remains faulty after software reflash and wiring verified, replace the ESP ECU and perform required coding and calibration.

Likely causes

  • Intermittent CAN bus wiring fault between ESP ECU and other modules
  • Poor ground or supply voltage to the ESP ECU
  • Contaminated/corroded connector at ESP ECU or remote module
  • ESP ECU internal fault or memory corruption requiring reflash or replacement

Fault status

⚠️ Status
ESP ECU receiving invalid reception value from remote/source module — communication or signal integrity fault detected. ESP/traction control may be limited; further diagnostics required.
