Causes

  • Open or short in injector wiring (pinch, chafing, corrosion)
  • Poor or intermittent connector contact at injector 8
  • Failed fuel injector (electrical or mechanical)
  • Faulty injector driver/transistor in the PCM
  • Poor ground or battery supply to injector rail
  • High resistance in harness or connector causing voltage drop

Symptoms

  • Ill‑running engine or vibration under load
  • Misfire on cylinder 8 (P0308) or rough idle
  • Reduced power, hesitations or stumble during acceleration
  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Poor fuel economy or increased emissions
  • Possible increased injector noise or click change

What to check

  • Read stored freeze‑frame and live data; note RPM, load, fuel trim and misfire counters
  • Visual inspection of injector 8 wiring harness and connector for damage, corrosion, oil intrusion or loose pins
  • Check battery voltage and chassis/engine grounds
  • Measure injector coil resistance at the connector (compare to spec)
  • Back‑probe injector connector and monitor voltage while cranking and during commanded pulse
  • Use a noid light or oscilloscope on injector 8 to verify pulse presence and waveform shape

Signal parameters

  • Injector coil resistance: typical ranges vary by vehicle — low‑impedance injectors ~2–4 ohms, high‑impedance ~12–18 ohms (consult Land Rover spec for exact value)
  • Supply voltage at injector supply rail: approx. battery voltage (~11–14.5 V) with key on/crank
  • Injector driver output: near 0 V when driver is saturating to ground; open circuit near supply voltage when not commanded
  • Pulse width: 1–10 ms in normal running conditions (varies with load and RPM)
  • Oscilloscope waveform: clean square‑wave or switched waveform matching other cylinders (no excessive ringing, missing pulses, or clipped amplitude)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame and permanent data, note when fault set and any associated misfire codes.
  2. Perform careful visual inspection of the harness and connector at cylinder 8. Repair any physical damage.
  3. With ignition off, disconnect injector connector and measure injector coil resistance; compare to spec. Replace if out of range.
  4. Reconnect. Back‑probe the connector while commanding injector ON (use active test or crank engine). Verify: battery supply present on supply pin, driver switches to ground on command, and waveform/pulse width are similar to other injectors.
  5. Use a noid light or oscilloscope to confirm injector command and waveform quality. Compare to a known good cylinder.
  6. If driver does not switch or waveform abnormal, swap injector with another cylinder and see if fault follows the injector or remains on cylinder 8 circuit.
  7. Check continuity and insulation of the wiring from the injector connector back to the PCM; look for short to ground, short to battery, or high resistance/opens.
  8. Verify PCM grounds and power supply circuits. Repair any poor grounds or supply issues.
  9. If wiring and injector test good but fault persists, consider PCM driver failure; verify with manufacturer‑approved tests before replacing ECM (check for technical service bulletins/software updates).
  10. Clear codes and perform road test or reproduce conditions to confirm repair.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or damaged connector at cylinder 8 injector
  • Injector coil failure (shorted or open)
  • Wire rubbed through to ground or shorted to battery
  • PCM driver fault (if wiring and injector test good)
  • Intermittent ground or supply due to loose mounting or broken terminal

Fault status

⚠️ Status
