Causes

  • Faulty speed control/cruise control switch or stalk (steering column or steering wheel)
  • Damaged, shorted or open wiring harness between switch and module
  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at switch or control module connector
  • Intermittent or incorrect reference voltage (battery/ignition supply) to the switch
  • Faulty body/vehicle control module or PCM input circuit
  • Software or calibration issue in module (rare)

Symptoms

  • Cruise control will not engage or is disabled
  • Cruise may disengage unexpectedly or be intermittent
  • Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or message related to speed control
  • No response from speed set/accelerate/resume buttons
  • Stored P1565 code (may be permanent until cleared and fault fixed)

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all related DTCs with a quality scan tool
  • Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for cruise control
  • Visually inspect steering column switch, connectors and wiring for damage or corrosion
  • Check supply voltage and ground at the switch connector with ignition on
  • Operate the speed control buttons while monitoring live data for the command signal
  • Backprobe the switch signal wire and measure voltage/resistance changes while actuating

Signal parameters

  • Signal type: typically a low-voltage analog or digital input to body control/PCM (0–5 V range common)
  • Normal: stable voltage or discrete command values within manufacturer thresholds (often near 0–5 V with defined step values)
  • High/out-of-range: voltage above expected high threshold (e.g., >4.8 V) or invalid digital state
  • Reference/power supply: switched ignition voltage (~12 V) and ground must be present at switch
  • If the vehicle uses CAN/LIN messaging, expected messages/bytes should change when buttons are pressed

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a capable scan tool, read and save P1565 and any related codes; check freeze frame and live data while attempting to use cruise controls.
  2. Visually inspect the switch assembly, connector, and harness at the steering column for damage, corrosion, or fluid intrusion; repair or replace as needed.
  3. Backprobe the switch connector. With ignition on, verify reference voltage/ground and monitor the signal line while operating each speed control button; note voltages or signal changes.
  4. If signal is out-of-range, isolate by disconnecting the switch and measuring line voltage at the harness. If voltage remains high, suspect wiring short or module issue; if voltage is normal with switch disconnected, suspect the switch.
  5. Perform continuity and resistance checks between the switch pins and the control module connector; repair any opens, shorts to battery/ground, or high-resistance joints.
  6. Repair or replace damaged connectors, wiring, or the switch. If wiring and switch test good, consider module input circuit fault—verify with manufacturer diagnostic procedures and reprogram or replace module if required.
  7. After repairs, clear codes, perform function test and road test to confirm repair. Re-scan to ensure code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Failed or contaminated cruise control switch or multi-function switch
  • Short to battery or voltage bleed on the switch signal wire
  • Corroded/loose connector at the steering column or control module
  • Intermittent wiring break or chafed insulation causing high voltage reading

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Speed control command signal exceeds expected high-range threshold. Cruise control input reported out-of-range; functionality may be disabled.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
