P1565 — Speed control command key out of high range

Causes

• Faulty speed control/cruise control switch or stalk (steering column or steering wheel)
• Damaged, shorted or open wiring harness between switch and module
• Poor connector contact or corrosion at switch or control module connector
• Intermittent or incorrect reference voltage (battery/ignition supply) to the switch
• Faulty body/vehicle control module or PCM input circuit
• Software or calibration issue in module (rare)

Symptoms

• Cruise control will not engage or is disabled
• Cruise may disengage unexpectedly or be intermittent
• Malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) or message related to speed control
• No response from speed set/accelerate/resume buttons
• Stored P1565 code (may be permanent until cleared and fault fixed)

What to check

• Read and record freeze frame and all related DTCs with a quality scan tool
• Check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) or software updates for cruise control
• Visually inspect steering column switch, connectors and wiring for damage or corrosion
• Check supply voltage and ground at the switch connector with ignition on
• Operate the speed control buttons while monitoring live data for the command signal
• Backprobe the switch signal wire and measure voltage/resistance changes while actuating

Signal parameters

• Signal type: typically a low-voltage analog or digital input to body control/PCM (0–5 V range common)
• Normal: stable voltage or discrete command values within manufacturer thresholds (often near 0–5 V with defined step values)
• High/out-of-range: voltage above expected high threshold (e.g., >4.8 V) or invalid digital state
• Reference/power supply: switched ignition voltage (~12 V) and ground must be present at switch
• If the vehicle uses CAN/LIN messaging, expected messages/bytes should change when buttons are pressed
