Causes

  • Low battery or low system voltage
  • Poor or corroded ground or power connection
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay in cruise/PCM power feed
  • Damaged, shorted or high-resistance wiring/connectors to the cruise move actuator
  • Faulty cruise control actuator/solenoid/motor
  • Faulty BCM/PCM or related driver output circuit (less common)

Symptoms

  • Cruise control inoperative or unavailable
  • Cruise may disengage unexpectedly or fail to engage
  • Cruise warning or check engine light may be set/illuminated
  • Intermittent cruise operation that sometimes works after key cycles
  • No response when pressing cruise SET/RESUME or vehicle does not maintain speed

What to check

  • Use a scan tool to read freeze frame data and all stored/related codes; record PID values when cruise is commanded
  • Check battery voltage with key on and engine running (should be ~11–14 V KOEO, ~13.5–14.8 V running)
  • Inspect fuses and relays for cruise control and PCM/BCM power feeds
  • Visually inspect wiring and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins or water intrusion at actuator and module
  • Backprobe the cruise move circuit connector and measure voltage and ground while commanding cruise ON/OFF with a scan tool
  • Perform a wiggle test on harnesses while monitoring voltage to spot intermittent breaks

Signal parameters

  • Key On, Engine Off (KOEO): cruise move circuit supply should be near battery voltage (approx. 11–14 V) on the power feed; low indicates supply issue
  • Commanded ON: voltage at actuator should approach battery voltage or show expected PWM duty (vehicle-specific) when module commands movement
  • Inactive: actuator control output may be near 0 V or a defined rest voltage (vehicle-specific)
  • Actuator coil resistance: typically low ohms range (approx. 5–50 Ω) — consult vehicle service data for exact spec
  • Continuity to ground from module ground point: typically

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record P1580 and any related codes; note freeze frame and freeze-frame voltage. Clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault under the same conditions.
  2. Verify battery state-of-charge and charging system. Charge or replace battery if voltage is low and retest.
  3. Inspect fuses/relays for cruise control and related PCM/BCM power circuits; replace suspect items.
  4. Visually inspect all wiring and connectors between module and cruise actuator; repair damaged wiring or corroded connectors.
  5. Backprobe the cruise move power and control wires at the actuator connector. With key ON, measure supply voltage; with the scan tool command, measure control output (voltage or PWM). Compare to expected values.
  6. If supply voltage is low at the actuator but battery and fuses are good, trace supply wiring for opens/high resistance and repair. If supply is normal but control output is low, check ground and driver circuit at module.
  7. Bench-test or apply direct battery power to the actuator (using jumper leads and following safe procedures) to confirm actuator operation. Replace actuator if it fails to operate normally or draws excessive current.
  8. If wiring and actuator test good, suspect module (BCM/PCM) driver. Verify wiring integrity one more time, then follow manufacturer procedures for module testing/replacement.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test and repeated command cycles to confirm the fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Weak battery or poor battery terminal connection
  • Corroded ground at chassis or module ground strap
  • Open or high-resistance conductor between module and actuator
  • Damaged connector pins at actuator or module
  • Defective actuator that draws excessive current
  • Fusible link or relay contact failure
