Causes

  • Actual emission or engine/system fault causing ECU to request MIL illumination
  • Faulty instrument cluster (MIL bulb/LED or driver circuitry)
  • Open, shorted or corroded wiring/connectors between ECU and cluster
  • Faulty engine control module (ECU) output driver or internal fault
  • Loss of power or poor ground to instrument cluster or ECU
  • CAN / serial communication errors between modules

Symptoms

  • MIL (check engine light) illuminated (steady or flashing)
  • MIL may illuminate on key-on or only when engine running
  • Possible presence of other engine/emission DTCs stored in ECU
  • No MIL illumination during key-on lamp check (possible bulb/cluster failure)
  • Intermittent MIL behavior or loss of other dash indicators
  • Communication errors or instrument cluster malfunctions visible on scan tool

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs from engine ECU and instrument cluster using a proper diagnostic tool
  • Note freeze-frame or related codes — diagnose underlying faults first if present
  • Visually inspect fuses related to ECU and instrument cluster
  • Perform visual inspection of wiring and connectors between ECU and instrument cluster for damage, corrosion, loose pins or water ingress
  • Verify instrument cluster lamp (bulb or LED) operation during key-on lamp test
  • Check battery voltage and grounds at ECU and cluster (measure for good continuity and

Signal parameters

  • MIL request/output from ECU: logical state or low-side drive (verify voltage change when MIL commanded)
  • Voltage at instrument cluster MIL input: ~battery voltage (or driven low) depending on design — should change when lamp commanded
  • Battery voltage during tests: 12–14.5 V (stable)
  • CAN / diagnostic bus frames: presence/absence of MIL flag or status message
  • Continuity/resistance of wiring between ECU and cluster: near 0 ohms (short runs)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a manufacturer-capable scan tool; record all stored, pending and freeze-frame DTCs from ECU and instrument cluster.
  2. Clear codes, perform key-on lamp test and see if MIL illuminates and whether code returns. If other codes return, address those first.
  3. Inspect fuses, battery connections, and grounds for the cluster and ECU. Repair any poor connections.
  4. Visually inspect harness and connectors between ECU and cluster. Repair any damaged wiring or corroded terminals.
  5. Verify MIL lamp functionality at the cluster (bulb or LED). If lamp fails lamp-check but wiring and power are correct, suspect cluster module.
  6. Monitor the MIL drive signal at the ECU output (use multimeter or scope). Confirm the ECU is commanding the MIL and that the signal reaches the cluster.
  7. Check CAN/data-bus for errors or lost messages. If comms are faulty, diagnose bus termination, wiring, and other modules on the bus.
  8. If ECU output is not present but wiring and cluster are good, consider ECU internal fault and consult manufacturer service info for reprogramming or replacement tests.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and verify vehicle runs normally and MIL remains off during test drive. Re-scan to confirm no related codes remain.

Likely causes

  • Faulty cluster MIL bulb/LED or cluster PCB
  • Poor ground or power supply to cluster or ECU
  • Damaged wiring or connector between ECU and cluster (chafing, corrosion)
  • ECU internal fault or firmware anomaly
  • CAN bus communication error preventing MIL status transfer

Fault status

⚠️ Status
The ECU has logged a request to illuminate the MIL (diagnostic lamp). This indicates the module detected a condition or an internal/communication fault that requires attention. Additional DTCs and instrument-cluster messages may be stored – inspect those to identify the root issue.
