Causes

  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector/terminal at the front right of the alternator

What to check

  • Read stored freeze-frame and related codes with a capable scan tool; note voltage data and occurrence conditions
  • Inspect the right-side alternator connector and harness for corrosion, bent pins, water ingress, heat damage or loose terminals
  • Check fuses and relays in the charging and engine circuits
  • Measure battery voltage with engine off and engine running (expect ~12.4–12.8 V off, ~13.5–14.8 V running)
  • Check continuity/resistance of B+ and ground leads between alternator and battery/ground (look for high resistance)
  • Perform wiggle/pressure test on the harness while monitoring voltage/charging to reproduce the fault

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (engine off): ~12.4–12.8 V expected
  • Charging voltage (engine running, no load): ~13.5–14.8 V expected
  • B+ terminal continuity: near 0 Ω between alternator B+ and battery positive (very low resistance)
  • Field/control terminal voltage: may be 0–12 V or PWM signal when regulator is commanded (use oscilloscope to check duty/frequency on PWM-controlled alternators)
  • Diode/rectifier ripple: low AC ripple on DC output (excessive ripple indicates failed diodes)
  • Connector pin voltages: battery feed and control lines should match expected values from wiring diagram

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve P1629 and any other stored codes; record freeze-frame data and voltage readings.
  2. Visually inspect the front-right alternator entry area: connector housing, seals, pins, and nearby harness for damage or corrosion. Repair any obvious issues.
  3. Check and verify battery state-of-charge and terminal condition. Ensure battery is charged and in good condition before further testing.
  4. With a DVOM, measure battery voltage at battery posts (engine off) and at alternator B+ with engine running. Confirm charging voltage (13.5–14.8 V).
  5. Inspect fuses/relays for the charging/IGN circuits and replace if faulty; verify power feed to alternator connector pin(s).
  6. Probe alternator connector: verify B+ present, verify ground continuity, and monitor regulator/field/control pin for expected DC/PWM signal. Use oscilloscope if available to inspect PWM.
  7. Perform continuity/resistance checks on harness from connector to battery/ground and back-probe pins to check for intermittent connections. Repair/replace wiring where resistance is high or intermittent.
  8. Check alternator internal diodes and winding resistances (follow OEM procedure); if diodes/regulator out of spec, consider alternator replacement or overhaul.
  9. If wiring and alternator bench tests OK, verify BCM/ECM control outputs and module power/ground; swap module only after module-level diagnosis.
  10. After repair, clear codes, perform a charging system verification and road test to confirm repair. Re-scan for reappearance of P1629.

  • Intermittent contact due to a damaged connector retainer or broken wire near the connector
  • Regulator or diode/rectifier failure inside the alternator
