Causes

What to check

  • Verify VIN displayed by the affected module vs. VIN on vehicle ID plate and other modules
  • Check for recent service history: module replacement, reflashes or battery service
  • Measure battery/resting voltage and charging system health
  • Inspect connectors, grounds and wiring for the affected module and CAN bus for damage or corrosion
  • Confirm ability to communicate with the module using manufacturer-level diagnostic tool

  • Module identifier / part number / serial number readout
  • CAN bus error counters and message traffic for affected module
  • Supply voltage to module (key on & cranking) and ground continuity

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Confirm P1639 and any related codes on a full system scan; note whether code is current or historic.
  2. Verify actual vehicle VIN on door/post and other modules; compare to VIN read from the affected module via a dealer-level tool.
  3. Check battery voltage and charging system; ensure stable power (use charged battery or maintainer) before any programming attempts.
  4. Inspect physical connectors, wiring and CAN bus for corrosion, damage or loose connections; repair as needed.
  5. If module communication is possible, check module software/calibration and attempt a read of VIN and memory status; record symptoms and errors.
  6. If VIN is missing/corrupted and communication and wiring are good, attempt reprogramming/restoring VIN and module coding using manufacturer-approved diagnostic equipment and correct security access procedures.
  7. If programming fails or module reports memory/EEPROM faults, consider module replacement and proper VIN/security coding by an authorized workshop.
  8. After reprogramming or replacement, clear codes, verify VIN consistency across modules, perform relearns if required (immobiliser/key programming), and road-test to confirm fault does not return.
  9. Safety note: VIN and immobiliser programming often require dealer-level tools and security authorization. Do not attempt VIN programming without correct equipment and procedures.
