Causes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame data and note affected cylinder(s) and operating conditions
  • Use OEM-level diagnostic tool to read injector ID table / learned injector data from ECU
  • Compare injector part numbers and serial IDs on physical injectors to entries in ECU (if tool shows IDs)
  • Visually inspect injector harness connectors for corrosion, damage, bent pins or poor locking
  • Measure injector coil resistance and compare to specification for suspect injector(s)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OEM-capable diagnostic tool and read all DTCs; note freeze frame and any cylinder-specific codes.
  2. Check service history—were injectors or the ECU recently replaced or serviced?
  3. With diagnostic tool, read the ECU injector ID or learned injector table. Identify which cylinders, if any, show missing/incorrect IDs.
  4. Visually inspect suspect injector connectors and wiring for damage, corrosion, bent pins or poor contacts. Repair as needed.
  5. Measure injector coil resistance for suspect injectors and compare to spec. Replace any out-of-spec injectors.
  6. Use oscilloscope or bi-directional test on each injector to confirm injector driver is pulsing and the injector is responding (pulse width, shape, amplitude).
  7. Verify battery voltage and ensure stable supply; low voltage can corrupt programming. Recharge or supply stable voltage if needed.
  8. If injector IDs are incorrect or missing, perform manufacturer-specified injector learn/coding procedure with the OEM diagnostic tool. Follow exact steps and confirm successful writeback.
  9. After coding/learn, clear codes and perform road test/drive cycle while monitoring misfires, fuel trim and injector ID table. Re-scan for DTCs.
  10. If coding fails or the injector ID cannot be written, swap suspected injector with a known good unit and re-attempt learn; if problem follows injector, replace injector. If problem stays with cylinder/driver, suspect ECU injector driver or harness and continue wiring/driver diagnostics.
  11. If ECU software or calibration mismatch suspected, check for and apply the correct ECU reflash or software update per manufacturer guidance and repeat injector coding procedures.
  12. After repair and successful coding, clear codes and confirm normal operation over a full drive cycle.
