Causes

  • Intermittent or open/short in wiring or connector for clutch torque sensor, clutch pedal switch or related CAN/LIN bus
  • Faulty clutch torque sensor or clutch module (if vehicle equipped)
  • Faulty throttle body, throttle actuator or accelerator pedal sensors causing mismatched torque requests
  • Poor battery/charging voltage or bad ground affecting sensor/ECU signals
  • Mechanical clutch issues (slipping, binding, worn components) producing unexpected torque readings
  • ECU software bug or calibration/learn values corrupted

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Poor or delayed throttle response
  • Unexpected clutch engagement behavior or difficult gear changes (manual or automated manuals)
  • Intermittent faults that clear and reappear

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending DTCs, note freeze-frame and occurrence conditions
  • Capture live data: accelerator pedal positions, throttle position, clutch torque signal, clutch pedal switch, engine speed, vehicle speed and battery voltage
  • Check battery voltage and charging system under load
  • Visual inspection of wiring harnesses and connectors for damage, corrosion or water ingress (throttle body, clutch sensor/module, ECU)
  • Check for related communication errors on CAN/LIN bus
  • Inspect mechanical clutch operation for slipping or binding where accessible

Signal parameters

  • Accelerator pedal position (APP) sensor 1 and 2 (voltage/%)
  • Throttle valve position (TPS) voltage/% and commanded throttle position
  • Clutch torque sensor output (mV/V or Nm) or clutch module torque request
  • Clutch pedal position/switch status
  • Engine RPM and vehicle speed
  • Battery voltage and ECU supply voltage

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record all DTCs and freeze-frame data, then clear codes and attempt to re-create the fault while capturing live data.
  2. Verify battery voltage and ground integrity. Recharge or replace battery if voltage is low; ensure good chassis and engine grounds.
  3. Inspect connectors and wiring to throttle body, clutch torque sensor/module and pedal sensors. Repair any damaged wiring or corroded connectors.
  4. Monitor live signals for plausibility: compare APP vs TPS, and clutch torque vs engine/road load. Look for sudden jumps, offsets or loss of signal.
  5. Check CAN/LIN communications for errors that could corrupt clutch torque data. Repair bus faults before replacing sensors.
  6. Perform throttle body adaptation/learn procedure if prompted by manufacturer service information.
  7. If signals and wiring are good, test or replace the clutch torque sensor or clutch control module per OEM procedure. Re-test after replacement.
  8. If mechanical clutch issues are suspected (slip or binding), perform mechanical inspection and repair (adjust or replace clutch components) before replacing electronics.
  9. Check for and apply any available ECU or module software updates and perform required adaptations/calibrations.
  10. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test to verify the fault does not return and confirm normal throttle and clutch behavior.

Likely causes

  • Corroded/loose connector at clutch torque sensor or throttle body
  • Failed clutch torque sensor or clutch control module
  • Out-of-range accelerator pedal or throttle position sensor values (sensor drift or failure)
  • Low system voltage during a torque event
  • Incomplete throttle/clutch adaptation or missing software update

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Electronic throttle control monitor level 2/3 — clutch torque signal out of range or max torque error. Stored when ECU detects clutch torque value or related signal is invalid, implausible or exceeds configured limits.
