Transmission fluid temperature sensor out of autotest range

Causes

  • Faulty transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor (thermistor failure)
  • Open, short or damaged wiring in TFT sensor circuit
  • Corroded, loose or contaminated connector at sensor or TCM
  • Incorrect or very low/high transmission fluid level or severely degraded fluid
  • Poor ground or power supply to sensor/TCM
  • Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM) or internal software/calibration fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning lamp or MIL illuminated
  • Unusual or harsh shifting, delayed upshifts or downshifts
  • TCM may force limp mode limiting gears
  • Transmission temperature gauge or display may read erratic or blank
  • Possible stored related transmission DTCs

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all related codes with a capable scan tool
  • Check live data for transmission fluid temperature value and observe during warm-up
  • Visually inspect sensor connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and odor (overheating/burnt fluid signs)
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while monitoring live data for intermittent changes
  • Measure sensor circuit voltage/continuity and resistance per manufacturer spec

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: typically NTC thermistor (resistance decreases as temperature rises)
  • Normal signal: resistance and voltage vary with temperature — consult Land Rover service data for exact values
  • Typical open-circuit symptom: infinite/very high resistance or out-of-range voltage (no reading)
  • Typical short-circuit symptom: very low resistance or near 0 V / near battery voltage depending on circuit
  • Autotest range: signal outside manufacturer limits (excessively high, low or erratic). Refer to factory data for threshold voltages/resistances.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame, all stored codes and live TFT PID using a compatible diagnostic tool; note conditions when code set.
  2. Visually inspect sensor, connector and harness for obvious damage, corrosion or fluid contamination. Repair any damage.
  3. Check transmission fluid level and condition; correct level and replace fluid if severely degraded or contaminated.
  4. With ignition on (engine off) monitor TFT PID. Wiggle harness and connectors while watching for signal dropouts or jumps.
  5. Measure sensor resistance at ambient temperature and compare to factory specification. If values are out of range, replace sensor.
  6. Backprobe sensor connector and measure signal voltage with ignition on; compare to expected range per service manual. Check for short to power/ground.
  7. Verify continuity between sensor connector and TCM, and check grounds. Repair wiring faults as required.
  8. If wiring and sensor check good, perform a bench or functional test by substituting a known-good sensor or using manufacturer test procedures.
  9. Clear codes and perform road test/thermal cycle to confirm repair; if code returns after all wiring and sensor checks, consider TCM diagnosis or reprogramming per factory procedure.
  10. Safety note: be cautious of hot transmission fluid when checking fluid or testing with engine running; use proper PPE and supports.

Likely causes

  • Failed TFT sensor
  • Wiring harness damage or connector corrosion at sensor
  • Incorrect fluid level/condition causing abnormal temperature reading
  • Intermittent connector or poor ground
  • Less likely: TCM fault after wiring and sensor are verified good

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission fluid temperature sensor out of autotest range — sensor circuit reporting voltage/resistance outside allowable limits. Check sensor, wiring, connector and fluid condition before replacing TCM.
