Causes

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect scan tool, confirm P1717 and any related transmission or BCM codes; record live data for range/gear position.
  2. Visually inspect range sensor connector, wiring harness along the route, and transmission case connector for damage or corrosion. Repair as needed.
  3. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe the sensor connector and verify reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground presence per OEM specification. Move shift lever to observe signal change.
  4. Check continuity and resistance of the signal, reference, and ground wires between the range sensor connector and the TCM/ECM connector with ignition OFF. Repair any opens or high resistance.
  5. Check for shorts to battery and ground: measure resistance from signal wire to B+ and to chassis ground.
  6. If wiring and connector are good but signal is incorrect or noisy, substitute or bench-test the range sensor (if removable) or install a known-good sensor.
  7. After repairs, clear codes and road-test while monitoring live data to confirm correct range signal behavior across all selector positions and no reappearance of the code.
  8. If wiring, connector, and sensor check OK and code persists, test or replace the TCM/ECM or have it bench-tested/reprogrammed per dealer procedures.
