Causes

  • Burned-out instrument-cluster lamp or failed LED module
  • Blown fuse for instrument cluster or TCM lamp circuit
  • Open, short, or high-resistance wiring or connector between TCM and instrument cluster
  • Corroded or loose ground at cluster or TCM
  • Faulty instrument cluster (lamp driver)
  • Faulty Transmission Control Module (TCM) lamp output driver or software fault

Symptoms

  • Transmission MIL does not illuminate during key-on self-test
  • Transmission MIL does not turn on when scanner commands or when a transmission fault is present
  • MIL may be stuck on, flicker, or behave intermittently
  • Possible stored codes requesting MIL ON (e.g., P0700) accompanied by P1775

What to check

  • Confirm P1775 present and note freeze-frame/related codes with a scan tool
  • Perform key-on (engine off) lamp check — observe if instrument cluster illuminates all warning lamps
  • Attempt to command the transmission MIL on/off using a diagnostic tool and note response
  • Inspect fuses for instrument cluster and TCM circuits
  • Visually inspect connectors and wiring between TCM and instrument cluster for damage, corrosion, or loose pins
  • Measure voltage at the cluster lamp feed and ground with key on and while commanding the lamp

Signal parameters

  • Lamp supply voltage (key ON): approx. 11–14 V expected at cluster power feed
  • Control/output driver: 0–12 V or low-side switching depending on vehicle design (verify with manufacturer data)
  • Continuity target between TCM and cluster pins: near 0 Ω–5 Ω (wiring intact)
  • Open-circuit/no continuity: infinite/very high resistance (>100 Ω indicates break/high resistance)
  • Typical incandescent lamp resistance when cold: low ohms (single-digit Ω); LED modules show high open-circuit resistance unless powered
  • CAN bus idle voltages: approx. mid-rail (~2.5 V) on each bus line; check for errors or no communication with scan tool

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the customer complaint and reproduce: confirm MIL behavior during key-on and when commanded by scanner.
  2. Read and record all stored/pending codes and live data; clear codes and see if P1775 returns.
  3. Perform key-on lamp test: do clusters/warning lamps illuminate? If all lamps fail, suspect fuse/power/ground or cluster power supply.
  4. Use scan tool to command the transmission MIL ON/OFF. If it responds, issue may be intermittent; if no response, proceed.
  5. Check fuses and relays related to instrument cluster and TCM lamp circuits; replace if blown and retest.
  6. Inspect connectors and wiring between cluster and TCM for physical damage, pins pushed out, corrosion, or water intrusion.
  7. With connectors disconnected, measure continuity/resistance between the TCM lamp output pin and the corresponding cluster input pin. Repair open/high-resistance wiring.
  8. Measure voltage at the cluster lamp feed and ground with key ON and while commanding lamp from scanner. If power present but lamp does not light, bench-test/replace cluster lamp/LED module.
  9. If wiring and cluster test good, check TCM output on oscilloscope or multimeter per manufacturer procedure; if TCM output absent or shorted, consider TCM repair/replacement.
  10. Verify CAN bus communication (no errors) and check for other modules reporting lamp faults; repair communications issues if present.
  11. After repair or component replacement, clear codes and verify lamp operation and that P1775 does not return under test drive conditions.

Likely causes

  • Failed/failed LED in cluster or bad cluster connector
  • Open/short in lamp feed or ground circuit (wiring harness damage)
  • Faulty TCM output driver (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission system malfunction indicator lamp circuit failure — transmission MIL inoperative / open / short detected. Verify cluster lamp, wiring, fuses, grounds, TCM output and communication.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 0.5-2.0 hours
