Causes

  • Low, contaminated, or degraded transmission fluid
  • Worn or burned clutch pack or friction material (B or D)
  • Sticking or damaged valve in the valve body
  • Faulty shift/pressure control solenoid (B or D) or solenoid wiring/connectors
  • Internal hydraulic leaks (seal, bore or piston wear)
  • Torque converter or pump problems causing low line pressure

Symptoms

  • Check engine / transmission warning light illuminated
  • Erratic, harsh, delayed or missing shifts involving the gears that use clutch/brake B or D
  • Transmission slipping or inability to hold gear under load
  • Limp-in-protection (reduced gear availability)
  • Unusual transmission noises (chatter, grinding) during affected shifts

What to check

  • Read stored and pending codes plus freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool
  • Check transmission fluid level, color and smell (burnt odor) — correct type and level per manufacturer
  • Scan live data: commanded vs actual solenoid duty, apply pressures, clutch engagement status and transmission temperature
  • Inspect wiring harness and connectors for corrosion, damage or poor connections at solenoid(s) and TCM
  • Measure solenoid resistance and compare to manufacturer specification
  • Perform active tests (command solenoid B and D) with bidirectional scan tool while observing pressure and shift behavior

Signal parameters

  • Shift/pressure solenoid resistance: (manufacturer spec) — typically low ohms range; compare to spec
  • Commanded solenoid duty cycle: 0–100% (varies with conditions)
  • Line/apply pressure: typical automatic transmission range 80–140 psi (varies by model and gear/condition)
  • Delta RPM during apply: should meet manufacturer engagement thresholds during shift
  • Transmission fluid temperature: normal operating range ~70–120 °C (varies) — high temperature affects friction behavior

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; note transmission temperature and vehicle conditions when fault occurred.
  2. Verify fluid level, condition and service history; correct level if wrong and consider fluid/filter service if contaminated.
  3. Visually inspect wiring, connectors and grounds for the solenoid(s) and TCM; repair any damage and clear corrosion.
  4. With ignition on, measure solenoid B and D resistance at the connector; compare to spec. Wiggle harness while monitoring for intermittent changes.
  5. Use a bidirectional scan tool to command solenoids B and D individually while watching apply pressure and relevant PIDs (line pressure, clutch apply status).
  6. Perform line/apply pressure test at idle and during commanded apply to confirm hydraulic response; compare to spec. Low or no pressure indicates hydraulic or pump issue.
  7. If pressures and solenoids test good electrically but apply is incorrect, remove valve body to inspect for stuck valves, bore wear, or contaminated debris; replace valve body or repair as required.
  8. If internal clutch pack wear or leak is found, partial rebuild or transmission overhaul may be required (inspect clutch friction, plates, pistons, seals).
  9. After repairs, clear codes, perform relearn/adaptations per manufacturer, and test drive to verify repair; re-check for codes and proper operation.

Likely causes

  • Contaminated/low fluid reducing apply pressure
  • Solenoid or connector failure preventing proper control of the clutch/brake
  • Worn/friction material or internal leak in the clutch pack

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Transmission friction element B or D fault detected — the control module sees incorrect operation of a clutch/brake (B or D). May cause abnormal shifting or limp mode; further electrical and hydraulic diagnosis required.
🔴 Repair difficulty: Hard
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 3-10 hours
