Causes

  • Short to ground in wheel-speed/traction control wiring harness
  • Corroded or damaged connectors (ECU, ABS module, wheel speed sensors)
  • Faulty wheel speed sensors or sensor housings shorting to chassis ground
  • Damaged ABS/ traction control module or internal fault
  • Poor or missing ground(s) for ABS/traction module
  • Aftermarket electrical work or body repairs that damaged harness

Symptoms

  • Traction control/ESP warning lamp illuminated
  • ABS warning light may also be on
  • Traction control/ABS functions disabled (reduced stability assist)
  • Possible 'limp' or reduced engine torque in some vehicles
  • Inconsistent speedometer or erratic wheel speed indications

What to check

  • Use a capable scan tool to read freeze frame and related ABS/wheel-speed codes
  • Confirm P1811 is current and check for other ABS/C-series wheel speed codes
  • Visual inspection of ABS/traction control wiring, connectors and sensor harnesses for damage, corrosion, chafe or pinching
  • Verify proper power and ground at the ABS/traction control module
  • Disconnect wheel speed sensors one at a time to see if code or symptom changes
  • Measure continuity/resistance between suspect circuits and chassis ground

Signal parameters

  • Wheel speed sensor signals are typically AC (variable frequency/magnitude) or digital square wave depending on sensor type; they should not be hard-grounded.
  • At rest: sensor line should not read a direct short to chassis ground (infinite or high resistance expected).
  • With wheel rotation: signal frequency and amplitude should increase proportionally with speed (refer to OEM specs for exact frequency/voltage).
  • Module supply voltage and ground: steady battery voltage at power pin and low-resistance ground at chassis ground points.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Safety first: park on level ground, secure vehicle, battery disconnect only if required by procedure.
  2. Connect a diagnostic scan tool. Read stored and pending codes, note freeze frame and related ABS/traction codes (C-/U-codes).
  3. Clear codes, attempt to recreate (short test drive or wheel spin as appropriate) to confirm P1811 returns.
  4. Visually inspect ABS module connectors and harness routing to each wheel for chafing, broken insulation, corrosion, or water damage.
  5. With ignition ON (engine off), backprobe wheel speed sensor lines and measure resistance to chassis ground. Expect high resistance/open circuit (no short). If low resistance, isolate the short.
  6. Disconnect individual wheel speed sensors or harness connectors; if code goes away when a connector is disconnected, suspect wiring or sensor on that branch.
  7. Wiggle harnesses and connectors while monitoring live data and code status to find intermittent short to ground.
  8. Check module supply and ground pins for correct voltage and good ground continuity back to battery negative.
  9. If wiring and sensors test good, consult wiring diagrams and test continuity from module pins to each sensor — repair any shorts/open circuits found.
  10. If wiring and sensors are confirmed good, consider ABS/traction control module internal fault; verify with manufacturer-specific tests and replace module only after eliminating harness/sensor issues.
  11. After repairs, clear codes, perform relearns/calibrations if required, and road test to confirm repair.

Likely causes

  • Wire chafe or pinched harness causing short to ground
  • Connector corrosion at ABS/traction module or sensors
  • Failed ABS/traction module internal short
  • Faulty wheel speed sensors making unintended ground connection

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Stored DTC P1811: Low traction relation on all four wheels — short circuit to ground. Indicates a ground fault in wheel-speed/traction circuitry affecting ABS/traction control operation. Traction control likely disabled until the fault is cleared and repaired.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
