Causes
- Open or short in wiring to boost control solenoid (power, ground or signal)
- Corroded, loose or damaged connector at solenoid or ECU
- Failed boost control solenoid (coil or valve stuck)
- Blocked, damaged or disconnected vacuum/pressure hose(s) between solenoid and actuator
- Faulty turbocharger wastegate actuator or mechanical binding
- Faulty boost pressure/MAP sensor giving incorrect feedback
Symptoms
- Check Engine MIL illuminated
- Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
- Poor acceleration and turbo lag
- Intermittent or sustained overboost or underboost
- Erratic boost gauge readings (if fitted)
- Increased smoke or abnormal engine noise
What to check
- Read and record freeze frame and live data (commanded solenoid duty, actual boost/MAP, related parameters)
- Visual inspection of solenoid, wiring harness, connectors and vacuum/pressure hoses
- Check fuse(s) and ECU power/ground integrity for the circuit
- Measure solenoid coil resistance with multimeter
- Backprobe solenoid connector to check supply voltage and ECU control signal (PWM duty and frequency)
- Compare commanded duty cycle vs measured boost pressure response
Signal parameters
- Solenoid coil resistance (typical range): ~10–50 ohms (manufacturer-specific — consult service data)
- Supply voltage at solenoid (key ON): ~11–14 V (battery voltage)
- Control signal: PWM from ECU; frequency commonly 50–500 Hz (varies by vehicle)
- Commanded duty cycle: 0–100% depending on requested boost
- MAP/boost sensor output: 0–5 V range; expected pressure-related voltage should correlate with commanded boost
- Expected result: change in commanded duty should produce proportional change in boost within system tolerance
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve codes and live data. Note commanded boost solenoid duty, actual MAP/boost, and when the code sets (idle, load, cold).
- Visually inspect solenoid, connector and vacuum/pressure hoses for damage, disconnection, contamination or kinks. Repair as needed.
- With ignition OFF, disconnect solenoid and check for open/short to ground/power using an ohmmeter. Check coil resistance and compare to spec.
- With ignition ON (engine off) measure supply voltage at solenoid harness power pin and confirm good ground. Check for any blown fuses.
- Start engine and monitor live data. Backprobe control pin and measure PWM duty cycle and frequency while commanding different boost levels (or while driving).
- Command variable duty (if scanner allows) or perform road test while watching commanded duty vs actual boost. Note discrepancies and transient behavior.
- Pressure/smoke test intake/boost plumbing and wastegate actuator for leaks or binding. Verify actuator moves when solenoid is energized.
- If wiring and hoses good but solenoid does not respond correctly, replace solenoid. If new solenoid still fails, suspect ECU output fault and verify with wiring harness scope or replace/control module per OEM procedure.
- After repairs clear codes and perform road test to confirm proper boost control and that code does not return.
Likely causes
- Wiring/connectors to the solenoid (most common)
- Failed boost control solenoid
- Leaking or blocked boost/vacuum lines
- MAP/boost sensor reading inconsistent with commanded boost
Fault status
Status
PCM detected boost control solenoid circuit out of expected range or performance. Commanded control signal does not produce expected solenoid response or resulting boost pressure. Inspect wiring, connector, solenoid, vacuum/pressure lines and MAP/boost sensor.
