Causes
- Open or short in reductant injector wiring (broken conductor, chafing, disconnected connector)
- Corroded, dirty, or water-intruded connector at the injector
- Failed reductant injection valve (stuck open, stuck closed, open coil)
- Blown fuse or failed relay supplying the reductant injector circuit
- Poor or missing ground for the injector circuit or ECM
- ECM driver fault or internal module failure
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
- Reduced or disabled SCR reductant dosing leading to higher NOx emissions
- Possible limp/emissions-reduced operating strategy from the ECU
- Failed emissions test
- Possible fault-related messages (SCR system warning) on the dash
What to check
- Read freeze frame and complete DTC list with a capable scan tool; check pending vs stored and related SCR codes
- Attempt an active test / command of the reductant injector with scan tool and observe response
- Visually inspect injector connector and wiring for damage, corrosion, or contamination
- Measure injector coil resistance with connector disconnected (compare to spec)
- Backprobe connector while commanding injector: check for supply voltage, ground switching, and voltage change when commanded
- Check fuses, relays, and main SCR/DEF power supply circuits
Signal parameters
- Injector coil resistance: typically low-ohm (consult OEM spec; example ranges often ~5–30 ohms)
- Resting connector voltage (key ON, engine OFF): ~battery voltage on supply pin
- Commanded injector voltage behavior: ground-switched or PWM duty (voltage should change when commanded with scan tool)
- Injector current draw while energized: measurable increase over idle (use current probe as required)
- ECM command duty cycle or ON/OFF status reported by scan tool during active tests
Diagnostic algorithm
- Verify the code and any related SCR/urea codes with a scan tool. Record freeze-frame data.
- Visually inspect Bank 2 Unit 1 injector connector and harness for damage, corrosion, moisture, or urea crystallization. Repair as needed.
- With key off, disconnect injector and measure coil resistance. If open or out of spec, replace injector.
- Reconnect and backprobe the connector. With key ON (engine OFF) confirm supply voltage at the injector supply pin and good ground reference.
- Use a scan tool to command the injector while observing voltage/current at the connector. If supply is present but the driver does not switch or current is zero, suspect wiring open or ECM driver fault.
- Check continuity between the injector connector and ECM driver pin. Repair any open/short circuits, repair or replace damaged wiring and connectors.
- Inspect and test any related fuses/relays and the reductant pump/power supply circuits that feed the injector.
- If wiring and supply are good but valve fails to actuate or coil is out of spec, replace the reductant injection valve.
- After repairs clear codes and perform active test and a road or operational test to confirm correct operation and that code does not return.
- If problem persists after replacing injector and repairing wiring, consider ECM diagnostic/repair or replacement and consult OEM procedures.
Likely causes
- Connector disconnected or corroded at the reductant injector (most common)
- Wiring harness damage near engine/transmission or along harness routing
- Failed injector coil (open circuit)
- Blown fuse or bad relay supplying SCR injection components
- ECM control output failed (rare)
