Causes

  • Corroded, loose, or damaged electrical connector at IMT sensor/actuator
  • Broken, shorted, or intermittent wiring harness (open, short to ground or supply, high resistance)
  • Failed IMT position sensor or integrated actuator (potentiometer/hall sensor)
  • Mechanical binding, seized, or sticking IMT valve/actuator
  • Intermittent PCM input or internal PCM fault
  • Contamination (oil, carbon) or vacuum leaks affecting actuator operation

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (malfunction indicator lamp) illuminated, intermittent
  • Intermittent rough idle or surging at certain RPM/load conditions
  • Reduced engine performance or hesitation during acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy in some driving conditions
  • Occasional unusual intake noises or inconsistent throttle response

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; note conditions when code set
  • Visually inspect IMT valve, actuator, harness and connector for damage, corrosion or contamination
  • Wiggle-test wiring and connector while monitoring live IMT position signal for dropouts
  • Backprobe sensor connector and measure reference, signal and ground voltages with key ON
  • Check continuity and resistance of wiring between sensor and PCM (with battery disconnected)
  • Command IMT open/close with a scan tool and observe position sensor response and actuator movement

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage to sensor typically ~5.0 V (check manufacturer spec)
  • Signal voltage range usually ~0.5–4.5 V across full closed-to-open travel (varies by design)
  • Short to ground: signal near 0 V; short to 12 V or open circuit: signal pegged high or no change
  • Position sensor should change smoothly with commanded IMT actuator movement; look for jumps, dropouts or no change
  • Resistance or continuity of sensor/actuator internal circuits should match service data (if specified)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record freeze-frame and live data for IMT position and engine conditions. Note when the fault occurs (cold/warm, RPM/load).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the IMT valve, actuator, wiring harness and connector. Repair any obvious damage or corrosion.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF) backprobe the connector. Verify reference (5V), ground and signal are present and within expected ranges. Report any missing reference or intermittent signal.
  4. Perform wiggle tests on harness and connector while watching live signal. If signal drops or changes, isolate and repair wiring or connector.
  5. Use a scan tool to command the IMT actuator through full range. Verify the actuator moves and the position sensor changes smoothly and proportionally. Note any mechanical binding or delayed response.
  6. If signal is erratic with no wiring faults, disconnect sensor and measure internal resistance (if specified) or substitute a known-good sensor to confirm.
  7. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connector, sensor or actuator as indicated. Clean and lubricate mechanical components if binding is found.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and verify the fault does not return under the original conditions. If the issue persists with verified wiring and a known-good sensor, consider PCM input fault diagnosis or reprogramming as a last step.

Likely causes

  • Poor connector contact or corrosion at the IMT valve sensor/actuator
  • Damaged or chafed wiring between IMT sensor and PCM
  • Failed IMT position sensor or actuator
  • Binding IMT valve preventing expected position change
