Causes

  • Failed EGT sensor (thermocouple or NTC type)
  • Open, short, or high-resistance wiring between sensor and PCM
  • Corroded, loose, or contaminated connector/pins
  • Sensor damaged by soot, oil, ash or excessive heat
  • Poor ground or reference at PCM
  • Intermittent connection due to broken wire or terminal

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine light
  • Stored P2082 code (may be one of multiple EGT codes)
  • Reduced engine power or limp mode during fault conditions
  • Failed or inhibited DPF regeneration on diesel engines
  • Poor fuel economy or driveability issues under load
  • Intermittent faults or multiple sensor-related codes

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live EGT data with a scan tool; compare Bank 1 vs Bank 2 and sensor 1 vs others
  • Inspect EGT sensor, harness and connector for damage, soot, oil or melted insulation
  • Backprobe sensor signal and ground while monitoring live data during key on and engine run
  • Check connector pins for corrosion, pushed-out terminals or poor mating
  • Wiggle test wiring while observing live data to detect intermittent opens/shorts
  • Measure wiring continuity and resistance between sensor and PCM; check for short to ground or battery

Signal parameters

  • Thermocouple EGT (Type K typical): signal in millivolts. Approx. 0–50 mV across 0–1000°C. Typical operating range under load ~8–30 mV (approx. 200–800°C).
  • NTC/Resistance type EGT: resistance falls/rises with temperature. Expect manufacturer-specific resistance table; common values are tens of ohms at high temp and kilo-ohms at ambient — consult spec.
  • Voltage-signal sensors (some designs): expect 0–5 V range. Faults often show open (near 0 V or floating) or shorted (near 5 V) or implausible jumps.
  • Typical fault indicators: steady out-of-range value, no change with engine temp/load, or rapid noisy fluctuations.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze-frame and all active/pending EGT and related codes. Note conditions (load, temp, RPM) when code set.
  2. Visually inspect Bank 2 Sensor 1, its mounting, and wiring harness for heat damage, chafing, contamination or connector issues.
  3. With a scan tool, monitor live EGT sensor data during key on and while warming or under load. Compare with other EGT sensors and expected behavior.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector to measure signal vs. reference ground. For thermocouples measure mV at the sensor connector; for voltage/resistance type measure voltage or resistance per OEM spec.
  5. Perform continuity and short tests: check continuity from sensor terminal to PCM pin, and check for short to battery or ground. Repair any damaged wiring.
  6. Wiggle test the harness and connectors while watching live data to find intermittent faults. Repair or replace damaged connectors/terminals.
  7. If wiring and connector are good, swap with a known-good identical sensor (if available and safe to do) or install a replacement EGT sensor and re-test.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform road test or forced regeneration cycle (if applicable) to confirm the fault does not return.
  9. If issue persists with good sensor and wiring, check PCM power/ground and consider PCM diagnostic or software update.

Likely causes

  • Broken or chafed harness near exhaust flex or mounting points
  • Connector contamination/corrosion from moisture or exhaust residue
  • Sensor element failed from over-temperature or physical damage
  • Short to battery or ground from damaged insulation
  • Incorrect sensor installed or incompatible replacement
