Causes

  • Damaged, corroded, or loose wiring or connector to the throttle actuator
  • Failed throttle body assembly (actuator motor or internal gearbox)
  • Faulty throttle position sensor(s) or feedback signal
  • PCM/ECM driver circuit fault
  • Mechanical binding of the throttle plate or foreign debris
  • Intermittent short to battery or ground, or high resistance in supply/ground

Symptoms

  • Check Engine MIL illuminated
  • Reduced engine power / limp-home mode
  • Poor or delayed throttle response
  • Engine may idle erratically or high/low idle
  • Cruise control disabled

What to check

  • Read and record freeze-frame and full DTC list using a capable scan tool
  • Check for related codes (TPS, short/open, or PCM faults)
  • Visual inspection of throttle body connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or pin push-out
  • Backprobe and observe throttle position and actuator command values with scan tool (idle and commanded throttle)
  • Wiggle test wiring harness to try to reproduce the fault
  • Measure supply voltage and ground at throttle body connector with ignition ON

Signal parameters

  • Throttle position sensor (TPS) feedback: typically ~0.5–4.5 V across throttle range (dependent on vehicle calibration)
  • Actuator driver output: PWM duty cycle 0–100% (or commanded voltage 0–12 V depending on system)
  • Supply voltage to throttle body: battery voltage (~12 V) with ignition ON
  • Actuator current: pulses of current (can reach several amps during operation) — use current clamp or manufacturer values if available
  • Expected throttle angle vs commanded position should track closely in live data

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all stored codes and freeze-frame data; note conditions when fault set.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce; observe live data (pedal position, throttle angle, actuator command, supply voltage).
  3. Perform visual inspection of throttle body connector and harness; repair any obvious damage or corrosion.
  4. With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe connector: verify battery supply to throttle body and a good ground. Compare voltages to specification.
  5. Monitor TPS and commanded throttle values while commanding throttle open/closed with a diagnostic tool. Confirm feedback moves in proportion to command.
  6. Measure resistance of actuator motor coils (if service data available) and compare to spec. Check for shorts to ground or battery.
  7. Perform wiggle test on harness while monitoring live data to find intermittent faults.
  8. If wiring and connectors test good, command actuator while monitoring current draw; excessive or no current suggests motor or internal mechanical fault.
  9. Inspect throttle plate for binding, carbon build-up, or mechanical obstruction; clean if needed and retest.
  10. If actuator motor or TPS is faulty or values out of range, replace throttle body assembly per manufacturer procedure and perform relearn/calibration.
  11. If replacement throttle body does not resolve and wiring is good, consider PCM/ECM driver evaluation or replacement as a last step (follow manufacturer diagnostics).
  12. After repairs, clear codes and verify proper operation with road test and final scan tool check.

Likely causes

  • Wiring harness damage or poor connector contact at throttle body
  • Throttle actuator motor internal failure
  • Contaminated or mechanically sticking throttle plate
  • Faulty throttle position sensor feedback
  • PCM output driver fault (less common)

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P2101 — Throttle Actuator Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance. PCM detects actuator output or feedback outside expected range; throttle control may be limited.
