Causes

  • Open or shorted sensor signal wire (to ground or battery)
  • Corroded, damaged or disconnected sensor connector
  • Failed oxygen sensor (internal open/short)
  • Failed sensor heater circuit or blown fuse/relay (where applicable)
  • PCM input circuit fault
  • Exhaust damage or extreme heat causing sensor or wiring failure

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced fuel economy or incorrect long-term fuel trim behavior
  • Possible failed emissions test
  • No obvious driveability symptoms if only downstream sensor is affected
  • Stored related faults for heater or other O2 sensors

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and live data for Bank 2 Sensor 3 and compare to other O2 sensors
  • Inspect sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, heat damage, chafing or water ingress
  • Back-probe signal wire with an oscilloscope or multimeter while engine is running
  • Check for continuity and shorts between the sensor signal, power, ground and PCM
  • Verify heater circuit power and ground (if sensor is heated) with key on/engine running
  • Scan for related codes (heater circuit, circuit high/low) and note fuel trims and catalyst status

Signal parameters

  • Typical narrowband zirconia O2 sensor voltage range: ~0.1–0.9 V (switching for upstream sensors)
  • Downstream (post-cat) sensor is normally more stable; expected small fluctuations near mid‑range when catalyst healthy
  • Heater circuit should show battery voltage to sensor heater power pin with key on and low resistance to ground when cold (refer to service manual for exact resistance)
  • No sensor signal (open circuit) will show a steady ~0 V or an out‑of‑range voltage on the PCM input
  • Oscilloscope: upstream sensors show switching waveform; downstream should be low amplitude/slow changes

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect an OBD-II scanner, read PCM data and confirm P2276 and any related codes. Record freeze frame and live values for Bank 2 Sensor 3.
  2. Visually inspect the sensor, wiring and connector for damage, corrosion, melted insulation or signs of exhaust heat. Repair obvious damage.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF), back-probe the connector: verify reference power (if used), ground and sensor signal wiring present to the connector. Check for proper heater supply voltage where applicable.
  4. Start engine and monitor the sensor signal with a multimeter or, preferably, an oscilloscope. Confirm whether the signal is present, fluctuating, or stuck/absent.
  5. If signal is absent, check continuity from the sensor signal pin to the PCM pin and check for shorts to ground or battery. Repair any wiring faults found.
  6. Check heater circuit resistance and operation (apply power momentarily or use scanner commands) against manufacturer spec. Replace the sensor if heater or internal element has failed.
  7. If wiring and sensor check good but no signal at PCM, test the PCM input for proper operation — consult wiring diagrams and consider PCM bench testing or replacement if necessary.
  8. After repairs, clear codes and perform a drive cycle while monitoring sensor and fuel trim data to confirm the fault is resolved.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector at bank 2 sensor 3 (corrosion/loose pins)
  • Broken/shorted signal wire between sensor and PCM
  • Failed downstream oxygen sensor (sensor 3)
  • Heater circuit fault preventing correct sensor operation
  • Aftermarket/incorrect replacement sensor or installation damage

Fault status

⚠️ Status
O2 sensor signal lost — Bank 2 Sensor 3. PCM is not receiving a valid oxygen sensor voltage from the downstream sensor; possible open circuit, short, sensor failure, or connector/wiring issue.
🟡 Repair difficulty: Medium
⏱️ Diagnostic time: 1.0-3.0 hours
