Causes

What to check

  • Read stored/active/pendant codes and freeze-frame data with a scan tool

  • Visually inspect fuel lines, connectors and fuel rail for leaks or damage
  • Inspect wiring and connectors for the fuel rail pressure sensor and regulator; look for corrosion, broken pins, or damaged insulation
  • Verify fuel pump prime and listen for pump operation when key on (engine off)
  • Check fuel filter condition and replace if service interval exceeded

Signal parameters

  • Fuel rail pressure (live) — must be within manufacturer-specified range; PCM learned lower limit exceeded (very low)
  • Fuel pressure sensor voltage (typical sensor ~0.5–4.5 V range; low voltage indicates low pressure reading)
  • Key On Engine Off (KOEO) — pressure gauge should read system-specific prime pressure or near zero if electrically isolated
  • Cranking/idle/load pressures — compare to OEM spec to see if pressure rises appropriately
  • Fuel pump current draw — elevated or reduced draw can indicate pump fault

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record code, freeze-frame and any related codes. Don’t clear codes yet.
  2. Check battery voltage and ensure good charging system operation. Low voltage can affect pump output.
  3. Visually inspect fuel system for leaks, damaged lines, and external regulator vacuum hoses (if present).
  4. Inspect wiring and connectors for the fuel rail pressure sensor and regulator; repair any damage. Backprobe sensor connector to verify reference (5V), ground and signal integrity.
  5. With a scan tool, observe live fuel rail pressure and sensor voltage. Note values at KOEO, cranking and idle. Compare to spec.
  6. Attach a calibrated fuel pressure gauge to the rail test port and measure actual pressure under the same conditions. If pressure is low, continue.
  7. If pressure gauge confirms low rail pressure, check fuel pump operation and fuel filter condition. Measure pump current; inspect feed and return lines for restriction.
  8. If pump and filter are good, inspect/replace fuel pressure regulator. If regulator is controlled (electronic), check control circuit and module outputs.
  9. If gauge shows correct pressure but PCM reports low, suspect the pressure sensor. Test sensor voltage and replace sensor if out of spec.
  10. Repair or replace failed components as indicated (pump, filter, regulator, sensor, wiring). Perform required relearn/adaptive procedures with a diagnostic tool if applicable.
  11. Clear codes and perform road test/drive cycle to confirm the learning completes and the DTC does not return.
  12. Safety note: relieve fuel system pressure before disconnecting fittings; follow fire and fuel-handling precautions.
