Causes

  • Stuck or seized compressor outlet switching valve (carbon, corrosion, mechanical binding)
  • Failed valve actuator or solenoid
  • Blocked or collapsed vacuum/pressure supply lines

  • Clogged passages or ports in the turbo housing or charge piping

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; note boost target vs actual and valve command
  • Visually inspect valve, connectors, wiring harness and routing for damage or corrosion
  • Actuate valve with scan tool (if supported) and observe movement and boost response
  • Measure actuator coil resistance and control voltage/ground with multimeter
  • Check vacuum/pressure supply lines for leaks, blockages or collapsed hoses
  • Inspect charge piping, intercooler and ports for debris or restriction

Signal parameters

  • Commanded valve position or duty cycle (%) from ECU
  • Actual valve position or feedback (if valve has position sensor)
  • Actuator coil resistance (Ω)
  • Control signal voltage to valve (V) and ground integrity
  • Intake manifold pressure / boost (kPa or bar)
  • Turbocharger speed (RPM) or turbo sensor data (if available)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTC and freeze frame data. Note engine conditions when code stored (RPM, load, temp).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the valve, connectors, wiring, vacuum/pressure hoses, and charge piping for damage, disconnection, or contamination.
  3. Using a scan tool, command the switching valve open/closed while observing live data for valve command and boost response. Confirm valve does not move when commanded.
  4. With ignition off, measure actuator coil resistance and compare to specification. Check for short to ground or open circuit.
  5. Backprobe the control connector with ignition on and command the valve while measuring voltage/duty cycle to verify ECU output and ground return.
  6. Inspect and test vacuum/pressure supply lines (if vacuum/pressure operated). Replace collapsed or leaking hoses and fittings.
  7. Remove the valve or access the compressor outlet ports and inspect for carbon, debris or seized linkage. Clean if contamination present and retest.
  8. If valve is electrical and tests indicate no movement despite correct control signals, replace the valve/actuator assembly.
  9. After repair or cleaning, clear codes, perform a re-learn or adaptation if required by manufacturer, then road test and confirm normal boost behavior and no return of code.
  10. If electrical signals are missing or inconsistent, trace and repair wiring/connector issues or consider ECU diagnosis if harness and valve are good.
