Causes
- Short to battery voltage in the LD (leak detection) pump control circuit
- Open or corroded connector causing abnormal voltage readings
- Failed leak detection pump with internal electrical fault
- Faulty driver in the powertrain control module (PCM/ECM)
- Blown or incorrect fuse or a stuck relay supplying constant voltage
- Aftermarket wiring or repairs introducing incorrect connections
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
- EVAP system readiness test may fail (vehicle may not set to ready for inspection)
- Possible inability to perform EVAP leak detection tests
- In some cases, audible pump operation when it should be off or no pump operation when commanded
What to check
- Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; note conditions when code set
- Verify ability to command the LD pump ON/OFF from the scan tool and observe symptoms
- Visually inspect LD pump, wiring, and connectors for damage, corrosion, or aftermarket splices
- Backprobe the pump control connector and measure voltage with pump commanded ON and OFF
- Check fuses and relays related to EVAP/leak detection pump power supply
- Measure pump coil resistance at the connector with harness disconnected (compare to spec)
Signal parameters
- Expected at connector with PCM commanding OFF: near 0 V (or low reference voltage) on switch/driver side; no battery feed
- Expected at connector with PCM commanding ON: switched voltage close to battery voltage (~11–14 V) OR driver to ground depending on vehicle design
- Abnormal condition: voltage higher than expected when commanded OFF or continuously present battery voltage when it should be removed
- Pump coil resistance (typical range): often 1–50 ohms depending on design — consult vehicle-specific spec
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve code, freeze frame and any pending/related EVAP codes; record live data.
- Attempt an active test: command the LD pump ON with a scan tool and observe if voltage and current change as expected.
- With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the pump control pin. Observe voltage with command OFF and ON. Note if voltage is high when it should be low.
- Disconnect the pump harness and measure resistance of the pump coil to ground and between terminals. Compare to spec to check for internal short.
- Inspect and test for short to battery: disconnect battery-positive feed circuits or isolate harness sections and recheck voltage on control wire.
- Inspect connectors, pins and harness along the circuit for corrosion, melted insulation, chafing or signs of water intrusion. Repair any damage.
- Check fuses and relays in the EVAP/LD pump power circuit; replace if faulty. Replace pump if coil resistance or operation is out of spec.
- If wiring and pump test good, test PCM driver by checking output with a lab scope or substitute known-good PCM (or consult manufacturer procedures) before replacing PCM.
- Clear codes and perform drive cycle/EVAP test to confirm repair. Re-scan and verify readiness monitors.
Likely causes
- Short to +B on the pump control wire (wire chafed and contacting chassis or a live circuit)
- Corroded or damaged connector at the LD pump (voltage bleed or poor contact)
- Leak detection pump internal short or shorted windings feeding back voltage
- Failed PCM output transistor or internal short in the control driver
- Fuse or relay stuck closed supplying power when circuit should be off
Fault status
Status
EVAP leak detection pump control circuit voltage higher than expected. Check pump, wiring, connector, fuses/relays, and control module.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1.0-2.5 hours
