Causes
- Faulty air flow/pressure sensor (bank 2)
- Open or shorted wiring in sensor signal, power, or ground circuit
- Corroded, loose, or damaged connector at the sensor
- Failed secondary air injection (AIR) pump, valve, or check valve causing abnormal pressure/flow
- Blocked or collapsed air hoses or passages in the AIR system
- Poor ground or insufficient reference/5V supply from ECM
Symptoms
- Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
- Possible reduced or disabled secondary air injection operation
- Rough idle or driveability problems if AIR system affects mixture control
- Distinct mechanical noise from failed AIR pump (whine/grind) in some vehicles
- Stored freeze-frame data showing conditions when fault was set
What to check
- Read and record freeze-frame and freeze data, and confirm active/confirming status of P2435
- Perform visual inspection of sensor, connectors, wiring harness, AIR pump, valves and hoses on bank 2
- Check and record reference supply (usually 5V) and ground at the sensor connector with key ON
- Backprobe sensor signal wire; measure voltage with engine running/at key ON and while activating AIR system
- Wiggle test wiring and connector while observing live data for intermittent changes
- Inspect/verify AIR pump operation, check valves and passages for blockage
Signal parameters
- Typical sensor signal: 0–5 V analog (varies by manufacturer). Expect a mid-range voltage at key ON (e.g., ~0.5–4.5 V) and a changing voltage proportional to pressure/flow when AIR system is active
- Open-circuit: signal ~0 V or no change
- Short-to-power: signal near battery voltage (~12 V) or fixed high value
- Short-to-ground: signal near 0 V or fixed low value
- If sensor is a switched/frequency output, expect a pulsed waveform; consult vehicle-specific manual for frequency and duty-cycle values
Diagnostic algorithm
- Verify the code and obtain freeze-frame/live data. Confirm symptoms and whether code is current or historical.
- Visually inspect the bank 2 AIR flow/pressure sensor, connector and harness for damage, corrosion, pin push-out, or contamination.
- With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (typically 5V), ground continuity, and signal voltage. Record values.
- Start engine or activate AIR system (if service-safe) and observe signal change. A static or absent signal suggests open/short; an erratic signal suggests intermittent wiring or faulty sensor.
- If signal abnormal, perform continuity and resistance checks from sensor connector to ECM pins to locate open or short. Repair any wiring faults.
- If wiring good, bench-test or substitute a known-good sensor (if available) and re-check system behavior and live data.
- Inspect secondary air pump, check valves and hoses for mechanical restriction or failure that could drive the sensor out of normal range. Repair or replace as needed.
- Clear codes and perform road/functional test to confirm repair. If code returns and wiring and sensor verified good, consider ECM input/driver fault and consult OEM diagnostic procedures.
Likely causes
- Damaged sensor harness or pin corrosion at the connector
- Sensor electrically failed (intermittent or out-of-spec output)
- Connector contamination or water intrusion
- Blocked AIR pump outlet, failed check valve or stuck valve producing unexpected pressure
- Blown fuse or relay supplying the AIR pump or sensor circuit
