Causes

  • Excessive soot accumulation in the DPF (long term short trips, low-speed operation)
  • Failed or incomplete active regeneration cycles
  • Faulty differential pressure (DPF) sensor or sensor plumbing (blocked, leaking or disconnected)
  • Faulty DPF temperature sensors (inlet/outlet) or wiring faults
  • Restricted exhaust downstream (cat/DPF damage, collapse)
  • EGR malfunction causing excess soot production (stuck open, leaking)

Symptoms

  • DPF warning lamp or check engine light illuminated
  • Reduced engine power, limp/safety mode possible
  • Frequent or continuous regeneration messages/attempts
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Black smoke from exhaust at acceleration
  • Poor driveability at low speeds

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all stored/ pending DTCs for both banks
  • Review live data: DPF differential pressure, soot mass, DPF inlet/outlet temperatures, EGR position, boost pressure and fuel trims
  • Confirm vehicle history: driving profile (short trips), recent repairs, DPF replacement or software updates
  • Visually inspect DPF and exhaust for damage, leaks or collapsed sections downstream of turbo
  • Inspect DPF differential pressure sensor, wiring and vacuum/pulse lines for blockages, leaks or corrosion
  • Verify temperature sensors at DPF inlet/outlet and harness/connectors

Signal parameters

  • DPF differential pressure (mbar or kPa) — normally low at idle; significantly elevated with restriction (monitor delta between inlet and outlet)
  • DPF inlet/outlet temperatures (°C) — large rise during active regeneration; little or no rise if regen not starting
  • Soot mass / calculated soot load (g) as reported by ECU — manufacturer threshold for action reached or exceeded
  • DPF differential pressure sensor voltage (typically ~0.5–4.5 V) — wiring/open/short faults will affect reading
  • Boost/ MAP pressure (kPa) — low boost under load can indicate turbo/leak issues increasing soot
  • EGR commanded vs actual position (%) — discrepancy indicates EGR fault that can raise soot

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture freeze frame and full scan for related DTCs; record live values for soot mass, DPF differential pressure, inlet/outlet temperatures, EGR position and boost. 2) Confirm vehicle conditions (fuel level, oil level, engine at normal operating temp) and try a manufacturer-recommended forced regeneration while monitoring live data and safety limits. 3) If forced regen does not reduce soot mass or differential pressure, inspect and test the differential pressure sensor and its tubing; clean or replace as required and verify correct readings. 4) Verify temperature sensors before and after the DPF — confirm they report realistic temperatures and react during a regen command. 5) Check for exhaust leaks, collapsed or damaged DPF, and downstream restrictions; pressure-test and visually inspect the exhaust system. 6) Diagnose root causes of excess soot production: test EGR operation, inspect injectors for leakage or poor spray pattern, check turbocharger operation and boost, and verify fuel system and combustion parameters. 7) If DPF is physically clogged and all contributing causes are resolved, perform professional DPF cleaning (forced regeneration with specialist equipment) or replace the DPF as required by manufacturer guidance. 8) After repairs, clear codes and perform road test and post-repair verification of soot mass, differential pressure and that no further DTCs set. 9) If problem persists, consult Land Rover technical service information for bank-specific thresholds, guided tests and software updates.

Likely causes

  • Physically clogged or damaged DPF on Bank 2
  • DPF differential pressure sensor reading high due to sensor failure or blocked sensor tube
  • Exhaust leak or internal collapse raising backpressure and preventing regeneration
  • Repeated failed regenerations due to short trips or cooling conditions
  • High oil consumption or oil dilution leading to increased soot loading
  • EGR valve or cooler fault causing excessive particulates

Fault status

⚠️ Status
DPF restriction detected — very high soot accumulation on Bank 2. Forced regeneration may be required; if regen cannot clear the soot, DPF cleaning or replacement and repair of root causes may be necessary.
