Causes
- Faulty or slow-responding NOx sensor (upstream or downstream)
- Restricted/clogged reductant (DEF/urea) injector nozzle
- DEF pump failure or insufficient pump pressure
- Low DEF level, contaminated or frozen DEF
- DEF tank heater or sensor malfunction (temperature/level)
- Wiring harness or connector faults to NOx sensors, pump, injector, heaters or ECM
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Check Engine Light illuminated
- Messages/warnings about DEF/Reductant system or aftertreatment
- Possible engine derate or reduced performance depending on manufacturer strategy
- Increased NOx emissions and failed emissions test
- SCR system may not enter active dosing; prolonged warm-up before dosing
- Possible DEF level low or quality warnings
What to check
- Read and record all stored and pending DTCs plus freeze frame and pending events
- Inspect DEF tank level and quality (water, crystallization, contamination)
- Visually inspect wiring and connectors for NOx sensors, reductant pump, injector and heaters
- Check for exhaust leaks upstream of NOx sensors and SCR inlet
- Verify DEF tank heater and level sensor operation and DEF temperature
- Check NOx sensor voltages, ppm readings and response time on live data
Signal parameters
- NOx sensor raw and processed values (ppmv) upstream and downstream
- NOx sensor response time and voltage/current
- Reductant injector pulse width and commanded dosing rate (mg/km or mg/stroke)
- DEF pump current draw and commanded operation
- DEF level (%) and DEF temperature (°C/°F)
- SCR inlet and outlet temperatures
Diagnostic algorithm
- Retrieve freeze frame data and all related codes (NOx sensors, DEF pump, injector, heaters). Note operating conditions when code set.
- Inspect DEF tank: check fill level, sample fluid for contamination or crystallization, verify correct DEF specification used.
- Visually inspect harnesses/connectors for corrosion, damage or loose pins at NOx sensors, reductant pump, injector and tank heater. Backprobe connectors while commanding components if safe.
- Check for exhaust leaks upstream of NOx sensors and SCR inlet and repair any leaks.
- Monitor live data during cold start and warm-up: confirm NOx sensor readings change with engine load and aftertreatment temperature; confirm DEF temp and level sensors report reasonable values.
- Command reductant pump and injector using diagnostic tool: verify pump runs, measure current, verify injector actuates and observe dosing pulse width and expected pressure/flow. Look for air in feed or restricted flow.
- If NOx sensors show no or slow response, test sensor heaters and signal circuits; replace suspect NOx sensors after verifying wiring integrity.
- If pump or injector fail functional test, test bench or replace pump/injector; clean or replace injector if clogged.
- Verify DEF heater operation if DEF temperature is too low to dose; repair heater or replace tank sensor as required.
- After repairs, clear codes and perform a verified drive cycle or manufacturer-specific diagnostic routine to confirm closed-loop reductant injection control is reached and P249C does not return.
- If system tests pass but issue persists, consider SCR catalyst condition and ECM/TCU software update or reflash as per manufacturer guidance.
Likely causes
- NOx sensor(s) failed or slow to respond
- Restricted DEF injector or injector stuck closed
- DEF pump or feed line restriction/airlock
- Low or contaminated DEF fluid
- Faulty DEF heater or sensor preventing proper fluid temperature
- Open/short wiring or poor connector at sensor/pump/injector
Fault status
Status
P249C — Excessive Time To Enter Closed Loop Reductant Injection Control. ECM set fault when reductant dosing control did not transition to closed-loop within allowed time. Check NOx sensors, reductant pump/injector, DEF level/quality, heaters, wiring and exhaust leaks.
Repair difficulty: Medium
Diagnostic time: 1-3 hours
