Causes
- Damaged or shorted sensor signal wire (short to ground)
- Corroded, loose, or damaged connector or pins at sensor
- Failed vacuum reservoir pressure sensor
- Loss of sensor reference voltage or ground
- Vacuum reservoir leak or blocked line affecting sensor reading
- PCM/ECM internal fault or poor PCM ground
Symptoms
- Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) or Check Engine Light illuminated
- Stored P2527 trouble code (may be accompanied by related vacuum/boost codes)
- Possible reduced brake assist or hard pedal (if vacuum reservoir used for brake system)
- Reduced engine performance or drivability issues in systems that rely on vacuum signal
- Intermittent or inconsistent vacuum-related component behavior
What to check
- Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; note sensor voltage and related freeze-frame parameters
- Visual inspection of sensor, vacuum reservoir, vacuum lines and harness for damage, contamination or disconnection
- Backprobe sensor connector and measure signal, reference (usually 5V) and ground
- Wiggle-test wiring and connector while watching live data for intermittent changes
- Measure resistance between signal wire and vehicle ground with connector disconnected to check for short to ground
- Inspect and verify PCM/ECM power and ground circuits
Signal parameters
- Typical sensor circuits use a 5 V reference, ground, and a signal wire
- Expected signal voltage range (typical): approx. 0.5 V to 4.5 V depending on absolute pressure; exact range depends on vehicle
- Low condition typically indicated by signal below ~0.4–0.5 V (thresholds vary by manufacturer)
- Signal should change smoothly when vacuum/pressure applied to the reservoir (use handheld vacuum pump)
Diagnostic algorithm
- Connect a scan tool, record freeze-frame data and live PID for vacuum reservoir pressure sensor and related sensors.
- Perform a visual inspection of vacuum reservoir, vacuum lines and the sensor connector for damage, contamination or water intrusion. Repair obvious issues.
- With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the sensor connector: verify 5 V reference (if used), sensor ground, and measure the signal voltage. Note values.
- If no 5 V reference or no ground, trace and repair power/ground circuits to PCM. Check fuses and main grounds.
- If reference and ground are present but signal is low, disconnect the sensor and measure resistance from the signal pin to chassis ground. A low resistance indicates a short to ground; repair wiring.
- Apply a known vacuum/pressure to the sensor with a handheld pump while monitoring signal voltage. If signal does not change or stays low, replace the sensor.
- Repair or replace damaged wiring/connectors as needed. After repairs, clear codes and perform a road test or system exercise to confirm the fault is gone.
- If wiring and sensor check good and the fault returns, perform pin-to-pin continuity to the PCM and inspect PCM grounds. Consider PCM fault only after all harness and sensor checks pass.
Likely causes
- Shorted signal wire to ground or chafed wiring harness
- Corroded/contaminated connector causing poor contact
- Failed or water-damaged pressure sensor
- Missing 5V reference or bad ground at sensor
- Intermittent harness damage near swivel points or engine movement
Fault status
Status
