Causes

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and all stored codes; note operating conditions when code set
  • Perform a thorough visual inspection of wiring and connectors for Bank 1 rocker arm actuator sensor B
  • Check engine oil level, condition and service history; look for metal debris
  • Backprobe sensor connector and verify reference voltage, signal voltage and ground at key-on and during cranking/idle
  • Wiggle test harness while watching live data for intermittent change
  • Check continuity and resistance of signal and ground circuits to the ECM (pin-to-pin)

Signal parameters

  • Reference voltage: typically a regulated 5 V reference from ECM (verify manufacturer spec)
  • Signal type: analog voltage or PWM/duty-cycle output that changes with actuator position (0–5 V or 0–100% duty cycle depending on design)
  • Expected idle movement: smooth variable change in voltage or duty cycle when valves or actuator are moved; no abrupt drop to 0 V (open) or constant 5 V (short to Vbat)
  • Resistance: open circuit (OL) indicates broken wire; near 0 Ω indicates short to ground (verify with manufacturer resistance spec)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record DTCs, freeze frame and live data related to rocker arm actuator B and Bank 1. Scan for related cam/crank/ oil-pressure codes.
  2. Visually inspect connectors, pins and wiring for Bank 1 rocker arm actuator sensor B. Repair damaged insulation, terminals or connectors.
  3. Check engine oil level and condition; change oil and filter if contaminated or overdue. If oil pressure warning present, diagnose oil pressure system.
  4. Backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (typically 5 V), ground continuity and signal behavior at key-on run and during cranking; compare to manufacturer values.
  5. Perform a wiggle test on harness while monitoring live data to locate intermittent faults.
  6. Measure continuity/resistance between sensor connectors and ECM pins; check for shorts to ground or battery.
  7. Use an oscilloscope to inspect the sensor waveform while commanding actuator or during engine operation. Look for missing, noisy, or frozen signals.
  8. If wiring and power/ground are good but signal incorrect, isolate and bench-test or replace the rocker arm actuator/position sensor assembly.
  9. After repair or replacement, clear codes and perform road test and re-scan to confirm code does not return. If fault persists, consult manufacturer service information for ECM programming/updates and advanced tests.
  10. If repeated failures occur after replacement, consider ECM diagnosis or replacement per manufacturer guidance.

  • Damaged wiring harness (chafed, pinched, rodent damage) between sensor and ECM
  • Corroded or loose connector at sensor or engine harness splice
  • Failed position sensor inside the rocker arm actuator assembly
  • Insufficient oil flow or dirty oil causing actuator to stick
  • Intermittent open/short caused by heat/vibration
