B Rocker Arm Actuator System Performance/Stuck Off Bank 2

Causes

  • Faulty rocker arm actuator (hydraulic lifter, actuator, or mechanical actuator) on Bank 2
  • Stuck or clogged oil control valve (OCV) / solenoid controlling the actuator
  • Low engine oil level, dirty oil or restricted oil passages feeding the actuator
  • Electrical problem: open, short, or poor connector at actuator/OCV or wiring to PCM
  • Faulty camshaft position sensor or other related sensors providing feedback
  • PCM/ECM software or internal fault

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) on with P2661 stored
  • Rough idle, hesitation, or misfire on Bank 2 cylinders
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode
  • Unusual valvetrain noise or ticking from Bank 2
  • Poor fuel economy

What to check

  • Read all stored and pending codes and review freeze frame data with a scan tool
  • Confirm engine oil level, condition, and service interval; check for sludge or metallic contamination
  • Use a scan tool to command the rocker arm actuator/OCV and observe response
  • Visually inspect wiring and connector for the actuator/OCV on Bank 2 for damage or corrosion
  • Measure voltage and ground at the solenoid/actuator connector with key ON/run
  • Check resistance of the OCV/solenoid against manufacturer specification

Signal parameters

  • OCV/Actuator commanded state (ON/OFF or duty cycle %
  • OCV/Actuator coil voltage (V) and ground continuity
  • OCV/Actuator resistance (ohms)
  • Camshaft position/angle for Bank 2 (degrees)
  • Camshaft position sensor A/B signals (raw)
  • Engine oil pressure (kPa/psi) and oil temperature

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Capture codes and freeze frame with a scan tool. Note related codes and conditions (oil temp, RPM, load).
  2. Check engine oil level and condition. If oil is low, dirty, or past service interval, top up and replace oil + filter before further diagnosis.
  3. With a scan tool, attempt to command the Bank 2 rocker arm actuator/OCV while observing live data. Note if commanded state changes and if cam phase/actuator feedback responds.
  4. Visually inspect the actuator/OCV connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, or damage. Repair any wiring problems and re-test.
  5. Test electrical supply: verify battery voltage at the connector with key ON; measure coil resistance and compare to spec. Check for short to ground or open circuit.
  6. If electrical tests are good but the actuator does not respond, remove and bench-test or swap the actuator/OCV with the corresponding Bank 1 unit (if identical) to isolate faulty part — only if manufacturer procedure allows.
  7. If actuator and OCV test good electrically, remove valve cover (follow service manual) to inspect rocker arm actuator, lifter and oil passages for mechanical sticking, varnish, or sludge. Look for proper movement and cam phaser condition.
  8. Inspect camshaft position sensor waveform and camshaft timing. If cam phaser or timing components are damaged or slipped, repair as required.
  9. Replace the faulty component (OCV/actuator/actuator assembly) only after confirming cause. Use new oil and filter; clear codes and perform relearn or adaptation procedures required by manufacturer.
  10. After repair, clear DTCs and perform a road test under the same conditions that set the code. Re-check for returning codes and verify live data for proper actuator operation.

Likely causes

  • Clogged or failed oil control valve (OCV) for Bank 2
  • Contaminated or low engine oil causing the hydraulic actuator to stick
  • Failed rocker arm actuator or hydraulic lifter on Bank 2
  • Wiring harness or connector fault to the actuator/solenoid
