Fuel Injector Calibration Not Learned/Programmed

Brand: Generic
AI status
Completed
ready
Completed 100%
Page language: EN

Causes

  • PCM/ECM was replaced or reprogrammed and injector calibration was not learned
  • Failed or incomplete injector calibration/relearn procedure
  • Corrupted or missing calibration data in PCM memory
  • Failed injector control module (ICM) or PCM hardware fault
  • Battery voltage low or interrupted during programming
  • Aftermarket or incompatible injectors without proper calibration

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or intermittent misfires
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode on some vehicles
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Poor fuel economy and higher emissions
  • Possible no-start if PCM disables injection

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and full live data from PCM; note other stored codes
  • Verify vehicle history for recent PCM or injector replacement/programming
  • Check battery voltage and charging system before attempting programming
  • Inspect injector connectors, wiring harness, and grounds for damage or corrosion
  • Measure static injector coil resistance and compare to specification
  • Confirm PCM software/calibration part number and VIN match

Signal parameters

  • Injector pulse width (ms)
  • Injector duty cycle (%)
  • Injector coil resistance (ohms)
  • Injector drive current (mA) or feedback (if equipped)
  • Fuel rail pressure (kPa or psi)
  • Battery voltage (V) during programming/relearn

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all stored and pending DTCs and freeze frame data. Note vehicle history for recent parts or programming.
  2. Verify battery is fully charged (13.0–14.5 V) and charging system healthy. A low battery can interrupt programming and learning.
  3. Inspect injector wiring, connectors, and grounds for corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation, or poor contacts. Repair as needed.
  4. Measure injector coil resistance for each injector and compare to spec to identify failed injectors or cross-injection wiring issues.
  5. Connect OEM-level scan tool and review PCM calibration/software ID and any manufacturer flags indicating calibration missing. Check for manufacturer-specific relearn or injector ID programming procedures.
  6. If available, attempt the prescribed injector calibration/learn procedure with proper tool and stable battery voltage. Follow manufacturer steps precisely (ignition/engine state, rpm, fluid temp as required).
  7. If programming fails, note error messages on the scan tool. Try re-flashing PCM with latest approved software and then perform relearn again.
  8. If relearn still fails, test injector drive circuits with a scope to verify injector command waveform and driver integrity; check for open/short or intermittent faults.
  9. If an injector control module or PCM hardware fault is suspected, consult manufacturer guidance — replacement may require bench programming by dealer or authorized service.
  10. After successful learn/program, clear codes and perform a drive cycle; verify code does not return and engine operates normally.

Likely causes

  • Vehicle recently had PCM or injector replacement and relearn not performed
  • Programming attempt failed due to low battery voltage or communication error
  • One or more injector electrical/identification circuits damaged or disconnected
  • PCM memory corruption requiring reflash or replacement
  • Aftermarket injectors installed that don’t match stored calibration
