Causes

  • New or replaced high-pressure fuel pump not programmed with vehicle-specific calibration
  • Battery disconnect or low vehicle voltage during HPFP learn procedure
  • PCM/ECM software mismatch or missing calibration data
  • Corroded or damaged electrical connector or wiring to HPFP or injector driver
  • Faulty HPFP control valve/solenoid or internal pump fault
  • Interruption during a previous learn/programming attempt

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Engine misfire on the affected cylinder or rough idle
  • Poor acceleration or reduced power
  • Hard starting or extended cranking
  • Possible fuel pressure faults or limp-home mode

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all stored DTCs with a capable scan tool
  • Check vehicle service history for recent HPFP or PCM replacement
  • Verify battery state of charge and charging system health
  • Inspect HPFP and injector harness connectors for corrosion, bent pins, or looseness
  • Check fuel rail pressure and compare to specification during cranking and running
  • Confirm PCM software/calibration level and check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs)

Signal parameters

  • Fuel rail pressure sensor voltage during cranking/running (commonly ~0.5–4.5 V range depending on pressure)
  • HPFP control solenoid command (PWM duty cycle or on/off command from PCM)
  • HPFP supply voltage (battery voltage at pump connector)
  • Injector pulse width and firing events for affected cylinder(s)
  • PCM diagnostic status bits indicating learned/unlearned state

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Connect a factory-level scanner or compatible diagnostic tool and retrieve all DTCs and freeze frame data. Note related fuel system or injector codes.
  2. Verify vehicle battery voltage is within specification (fully charged) and that charging system is OK. Recharge or replace battery if low before programming.
  3. Inspect wiring and connectors to the HPFP and affected injectors. Repair any damage, corrosion, or poor connections.
  4. Check fuel rail pressure with a gauge and compare against specification during cranking and under load to rule out mechanical pressure faults.
  5. Confirm whether the HPFP or PCM has been replaced or updated recently. If a new pump is fitted, ensure the correct manufacturer procedure for HPFP learn/programming is followed.
  6. Use the OEM dealer-level diagnostic/programming tool to attempt the HPFP calibration/learn procedure per manufacturer instructions. Follow prompts exactly; ensure stable battery voltage throughout.
  7. If programming fails, capture any tool error messages. Re-check wiring, fuses, and grounds. Attempt re-learn after repairs.
  8. If the pump cannot be calibrated and wiring/PCM are confirmed good, consider replacing the HPFP with a unit that can be programmed and then perform the calibration.
  9. After repair and successful learn, clear codes and test drive to confirm no recurrence. Re-scan to ensure DTC does not return.

Likely causes

  • HPFP recently replaced and not calibrated with OEM tool
  • Vehicle battery was discharged or removed while learn procedure in progress
  • PCM requires software update or reflash
  • Open/short or poor connection in HPFP control wiring
  • HPFP internal mechanical failure preventing calibration

Fault status

⚠️ Status
HPFP calibration for one cylinder is missing or not learned. The PCM detected the learned value is invalid or absent and set a fault. Programming with an OEM tool and verifying wiring, battery condition, and PCM software is required.
