Causes

  • Faulty electric transmission fluid pump (mechanical or electrical failure).
  • Open, shorted, corroded, or disconnected wiring/connector to the pump.
  • Blown fuse, tripped relay, or failed pump driver/transmission control relay.
  • Low vehicle battery/auxiliary battery or insufficient HV system supply preventing pump activation.
  • Internal transmission hydraulic blockage, seized pump, or debris restricting flow.
  • Faulty transmission fluid pressure sensor or incorrect sensor readings.

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light or malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated.
  • Loss of hydraulic pressure to transmission: harsh shifts, slipping, or transmission in limp/limited mode.
  • No audible pump operation when pump should run.
  • Reduced driveability, inability to move or limited gear availability.
  • Diagnostic trouble codes related to transmission pump or pressure sensor.
  • Unusual whining or grinding if pump is mechanically failing.

What to check

  • Retrieve stored trouble codes and freeze frame with a scan tool; note related transmission and electrical codes.
  • Check live data: pump command state, pump supply voltage, pump current/amps (if available), and transmission fluid pressure.
  • Verify vehicle conditions for pump activation (ignition, gear selector, engine/transmission temp, HV battery state).
  • Visually inspect fuses, relays, pump connector, and wiring harness for damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  • Confirm battery and charging system voltages and HV interlock status where applicable.
  • Listen for pump operation when commanded; gently backprobe pump power and ground to verify voltage presence.

Signal parameters

  • Pump command status (PCM/TCM request: ON/OFF).
  • Pump supply voltage at connector (V).
  • Pump current draw (A) or power consumption.
  • Transmission fluid pressure (kPa or psi).
  • Pump speed (rpm) if available.
  • Transmission temperature and vehicle speed when pump commanded.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data. Do not clear codes yet.
  2. Confirm operating conditions that should enable the pump (e.g., ignition on, range selector, temperature). Use a scan tool to command the pump ON while observing live data. Note if the PCM/TCM issues the command.
  3. If command is present but pump does not run: verify supply voltage at the pump connector with the command active. If voltage present, measure pump current. Low/no current with voltage present suggests internal pump failure or high-resistance connection.
  4. If command is present and no voltage at pump: trace back to relay/fuse/pump driver. Verify relay operation, check fuses, and test continuity/power at relay output. Inspect ground for integrity.
  5. If no command is present: investigate PCM/TCM inputs, CAN bus communication, HV interlock, and software conditions that inhibit pump. Check for related module codes and perform module communication tests. Consider software updates or reprogramming if manufacturer service bulletins apply.
  6. Inspect pump connector and wiring for corrosion, bent pins, or water intrusion. Repair or replace damaged harness and connectors.
  7. Check transmission fluid level and condition; drain and inspect for debris or metal contamination which may indicate internal failure. Verify pickup screen is clear.
  8. Bench-test the pump (per manufacturer procedure) if removable, or substitute a known-good pump where safe and permitted. Observe voltage/current/flow performance.
  9. Replace faulty component(s) (pump, relay, harness, sensor, or control module) as indicated by tests. After repairs, clear codes and verify repair by commanding pump and performing road/functional tests to ensure normal pressure and no recurrence of codes. Follow high-voltage safety procedures when applicable.

Likely causes

  • Pump motor failure or seized pump rotor.
  • Power/ground open or high-resistance connection at pump connector.
  • Control relay or pump driver failed on low-side or high-side.
  • Low system voltage from weak main/aux battery or HV interlock preventing operation.
  • Blocked pickup or restricted fluid path inside transmission.
  • Failed pressure sensor or incorrect calibration/software.
