Shift Fork B Stuck

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Physical obstruction or debris preventing fork movement
  • Bent, worn or broken shift fork or rail
  • Damaged synchronizer or shift hub that binds the fork
  • Valve body spool or bore sticking (hydraulic binding)
  • Faulty shift actuator or shift motor (if electronically actuated)
  • Low, contaminated, or degraded transmission fluid

Symptoms

  • Unable to shift into one specific gear or range
  • Transmission stuck in a gear or fails to engage commanded gear
  • Harsh, delayed, or missed shifts
  • Transmission warning light (MIL/SES) or transmission fault lamp
  • Limp-home mode or reduced shift functionality
  • Unusual transmission noise when attempting to shift

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and all stored transmission-related codes; record conditions when code set
  • Verify fluid level, color and smell; inspect fluid for metal particles on pan magnet
  • Visually inspect external shift linkage, cables and actuator for binding or damage
  • Check TCM software version and service bulletins for known issues
  • Inspect electrical connectors and wiring to shift actuators/solenoids for corrosion, damage or poor connection
  • Use scan tool to command gear changes and observe commanded vs actual gear and shift time

Signal parameters

  • Commanded gear/range (TCM command) — compare to actual gear
  • Actual gear (transmission output speed / calculated gear)
  • Shift solenoid command status (On/Off) and duty cycle
  • Shift solenoid resistance and current draw (ohms / amps) — compare to spec
  • Transmission line/hydraulic pressure (kPa or psi) — static and dynamic under shift
  • Shift actuator position or feedback (if equipped)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data, note conditions when P284A set; clear codes and attempt to reproduce.
  2. Inspect transmission fluid level and condition; look for metal debris on pan magnet. Replace fluid and filter if contaminated and retest.
  3. Inspect external shift linkage, cables and shift actuator for binding, misadjustment or damage. Repair or adjust as needed.
  4. Check electrical: inspect connectors/wiring to shift actuators/solenoids; measure solenoid resistances and compare to spec; test for proper ground and power.
  5. With a scan tool, command shifts and observe commanded vs actual gear, solenoid states, solenoid current and line pressure response while attempting the shift.
  6. Perform hydraulic pressure tests while commanding the affected shift to verify pressure is being applied to the correct circuit; low or no pressure indicates valve body, pump, or hydraulic leak.
  7. Remove transmission pan and filter; inspect valve body, spools and bore for debris, varnish or scoring. Clean and inspect for mechanical damage.
  8. If valve body components appear stuck or damaged, service/replace valve body or repair spool bores per manufacturer procedure.
  9. If debris, metal shavings, or damaged fork/synchronizer are found, remove transmission for internal inspection and repair (replace shift fork, rail, hub, synchronizer or other damaged parts).
  10. After repairs, replace fluid/filter, clear codes, perform relearns/adaptations and road test to confirm corrected operation.

Likely causes

  • Contaminated fluid with metal debris causing binding
  • Worn or bent shift fork or guide rail from mechanical wear or prior damage
  • Valve body spool sticking due to varnish or debris
  • Failed shift actuator or stuck shift solenoid preventing hydraulic control to move the fork
  • Mechanical failure of synchronizer/gear that blocks fork travel

Fault status

⚠️ Status
TCM detected Shift Fork B stuck — transmission unable to move to commanded gear/range. Mechanical or hydraulic fault likely.
