Causes

  • Mechanical binding, wear, or breakage of shift fork D, shift rail, or related linkage
  • Contaminated, burnt, or low transmission fluid reducing hydraulic actuation
  • Faulty shift solenoid or hydraulic actuator for gear D
  • Valve body sticking or internal bore damage
  • Wiring harness damage, connector corrosion, or poor electrical connection to solenoid/actuator
  • TCM software fault or internal TCM failure

Symptoms

  • Cannot select or maintain Drive (D); transmission stuck in another gear
  • Harsh, delayed, or no engagement into Drive
  • Transmission slips or drops out of gear under load
  • Check Engine/Service Transmission MIL illuminated
  • Unusual grinding/clunking noises from transmission during gear selection
  • Vehicle enters limp/limitation mode (reduced shifting capability)

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and stored data with a scan tool; note conditions when code set
  • Monitor live data: commanded gear, actual gear, shift solenoid D command and feedback, line pressure, input/output speeds
  • Visually inspect transmission fluid level and condition (color, odor, metal particles)
  • Inspect wiring and connectors to shift solenoid/actuator for damage, corrosion, or looseness
  • Measure solenoid resistance and apply bench/controlled activation to observe movement/current draw
  • Check battery/charging voltage during tests (low voltage can affect solenoid operation)

Signal parameters

  • TCM commanded gear position (commanded D)
  • Actual gear/shift state or gear ratio reported
  • Shift solenoid D command (ON/OFF) from TCM
  • Shift solenoid D voltage and current draw (V, A)
  • Transmission line pressure (psi or kPa)
  • Transmission fluid temperature (°C/°F)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all codes and freeze-frame data; note vehicle conditions (engine speed, coolant temp, transmission temp, vehicle speed) when code occurred.
  2. Attempt to reproduce the fault while monitoring live data. Note whether the TCM commands shift solenoid D and whether the actual gear/shift state changes.
  3. Inspect fluid level and condition. If fluid is low, correct level and retest. If fluid is heavily contaminated or burnt, plan fluid/filter service before further diagnosis.
  4. Visually inspect wiring and connectors to the shift solenoid/actuator for damage, corrosion, or poor pins. Repair any issues and retest.
  5. With a multimeter, measure solenoid D resistance and compare to specification. Backprobe connector and measure voltage while commanding solenoid with scan tool. Check for excessive current draw (possible mechanical binding) or no drive (open circuit).
  6. If electrical checks pass but actuator does not move, consider removing the transmission pan and valve body to inspect the valve/actuator path, check for debris, and confirm shift fork/rail condition if accessible.
  7. If internal mechanical damage (bent/broken fork, worn rail, fractured detent, heavy wear) is confirmed, transmission disassembly and repair or rebuild may be required — consult service manual or transmission specialist.
  8. After repair or component replacement, clear codes and perform a full road test under varied conditions to confirm correct operation and that the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Hydraulic contamination or low fluid preventing fork movement
  • Failed or electrically faulty shift solenoid/actuator for D
  • Shift fork or rail seized, bent, or broken
  • Valve body or bore sticking at the D shift path
  • Wiring/connector open, short, or high resistance between TCM and solenoid

Fault status

⚠️ Status
TCM reports shift fork D stuck/not reaching commanded position. Possible mechanical binding, hydraulic/solenoid failure, wiring issue, or contaminated fluid. Further diagnosis required.
