Causes

  • Open circuit or poor connection at the vaporizer outlet temperature sensor
  • Short to battery/ignition voltage in the sensor harness
  • Corroded or damaged sensor connector or terminals
  • Failed temperature sensor (thermistor) in the vaporizer outlet
  • Faulty ECM input or internal ECM wiring fault
  • Moisture or contamination in the connector

Symptoms

  • Check Engine/Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Possible reduced performance or limp mode on some systems using alternative fuel control
  • Incorrect fuel system operation when running on alternative fuel (e.g., LPG/CNG)
  • Stored freeze frame data showing high sensor voltage or implausible temperature
  • May see related codes for other vaporizer/alternative fuel sensors

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; record vaporizer outlet temperature sensor value and compare to ambient.
  • Visually inspect sensor connector, wiring, and vaporizer mounting for damage, corrosion or contamination.
  • Backprobe the sensor connector with key ON (engine OFF) and measure signal voltage with a multimeter.
  • Measure resistance of the sensor (disconnect sensor) and compare to specification if available.
  • Check for continuity between sensor ground and chassis ground and for short to battery voltage in signal wire.
  • Wiggle test wiring while monitoring live data for intermittent faults.

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor type: NTC thermistor (resistance falls as temperature rises).
  • Expected signal voltage range (typical): ~0.1–4.9 V depending on temperature and system; high-circuit condition often >4.5 V or stuck near battery voltage.
  • Typical resistance range at 25°C (generic thermistor): ~1 kΩ–10 kΩ (varies by manufacturer).
  • Open-circuit indication: infinite/very high resistance or signal voltage near battery rail.
  • Short-to-voltage indication: signal voltage steady at or very near battery voltage regardless of temperature.

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve and record freeze frame/DTC history with a scan tool. Confirm code is active and note conditions.
  2. Visually inspect the vaporizer C outlet temperature sensor, connector, and wiring for obvious damage, corrosion or loose terminals.
  3. With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe the sensor signal terminal and measure voltage. Compare to expected voltage table or typical range. Note if voltage is high (near battery).
  4. Turn off ignition, disconnect sensor, measure sensor resistance between terminals. Compare to manufacturer spec or generic thermistor expectations. Check resistance changes when gently warming the sensor (hand warm) to verify thermistor behavior.
  5. Check continuity between sensor ground and chassis ground; verify reference voltage (if present) from ECM is stable and correct.
  6. If signal wire reads high at the connector and sensor is good (resistance passes), inspect harness for short to battery rail. Use an ohmmeter to check continuity between the signal wire and battery positive (with ignition off).
  7. If open or intermittent suspected, perform wiggle test on wiring and connectors while monitoring live data or voltage to reproduce changes.
  8. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connectors, or sensor as indicated (repair must include sealing connectors against moisture).
  9. After repairs, clear codes and road-test or operate on alternative fuel to confirm the code does not return and sensor readings behave normally.
  10. If wiring and sensor check good but issue persists, consider ECM input fault and consult manufacturer resources before replacing ECM.

Likely causes

  • Open or disconnected sensor connector
  • Corroded/bent terminals causing high resistance or open
  • Failed temperature sensor (open thermistor)
  • Short to battery/ignition voltage in harness
  • Damaged harness where it rubs or was pinched
