Intake Air System Leak Bank 2

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Intake manifold gasket leak on Bank 2 side
  • Cracked or damaged intake manifold or plenum
  • Loose or missing bolts/clamps at intake/charge piping
  • Disconnected or damaged vacuum/PCV hoses (Bank 2 side)
  • Intercooler, charge pipe or turbocharger leak (if applicable) on Bank 2 plumbing
  • Faulty or leaking sensor port, vacuum fitting or seal near Bank 2

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light illuminated (P2ADF stored)
  • Rough idle or elevated idle speed
  • Hesitation, stumbling or reduced power under load
  • Lean fuel trims (positive short- and long-term fuel trim) on Bank 2
  • Visible/hissing air leak under boost or vacuum
  • Poor fuel economy

What to check

  • Read all stored codes and freeze frame data with a scan tool; record related codes and live data
  • Compare short-term and long-term fuel trims between Bank 1 and Bank 2 (look for positive trim on Bank 2)
  • Inspect intake manifold, boots, hoses, clamps and intercooler pipes for damage or looseness
  • Listen for hissing or vacuum leak sounds at idle and under boost
  • Use a handheld vacuum/boost gauge to check for loss of pressure or vacuum
  • Perform a smoke test on the intake/charge system to locate external leaks (recommended)

Signal parameters

  • Long-term fuel trim (LTFT) Bank 2: significant positive correction (commonly > +10%)
  • Short-term fuel trim (STFT) Bank 2: fluctuating or positive values indicating added fuel
  • MAP / Boost sensor: lower than commanded or expected pressure under load (boost vehicles)
  • MAF sensor: lower airflow reading than expected for given RPM/load if leak occurs downstream of MAF
  • O2 sensor (Bank 2): lean switching or voltage consistent with a lean condition
  • Intake vacuum at idle: higher than expected (for vacuum leak) or boost loss under load for forced induction

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code: connect a scan tool, note freeze frame and related codes, and record live data (RPM, MAF, MAP/Boost, STFT/LTFT, O2 voltages) while reproducing the symptom when safe.
  2. Visual inspection: with engine off, inspect all intake components on Bank 2 — manifold, plenum, intake boots, clamps, vacuum and PCV hoses, intercooler pipes and sensor ports — for cracks, loose clamps or disconnected lines.
  3. Functional checks: start engine and observe live data. At idle, watch for abnormal LTFT/STFT on Bank 2 and listen for hissing. Carefully use a non-flammable aerosol (or propane/enrichment tool from a safe manufacturer procedure) around intake joints to see if engine speed changes (exercise caution and follow shop safety rules).
  4. Pressure/smoke test: pressurize the intake/charge system or introduce smoke into the intake to locate external leaks. Repair any leaks found and recheck.
  5. Isolate components: if no external leak is found, remove intake manifold/plenum and inspect gasket surfaces and internal passages. Check for cracks or warped surfaces and replace gaskets or components as required.
  6. Verify related components: inspect PCV valve, EGR gasket and sensor mounting seals for leaks that specifically affect Bank 2 air path.
  7. Repair and verify: after making repairs, clear codes, perform a functional test under the same conditions that set the code, and confirm the fault does not return and that fuel trims and boost/vacuum parameters normalize.
  8. If code persists: consider instrument/sensor faults (MAP/boost sensor, intake air temperature sensor) or internal cylinder-to-intake sealing issues and proceed with advanced diagnostics (leak-down test, cylinder pressure tests) as needed.

Likely causes

  • Split or disconnected charge pipe between turbo/intercooler and throttle on Bank 2
  • Failed intake manifold gasket at the head on Bank 2
  • Loose hose clamp on intercooler or intake boot serving Bank 2
  • Cracked plastic intake plenum or throat near Bank 2 runners
  • PCV valve or hose leak feeding Bank 2
  • Leaking vacuum line to accessories on Bank 2 side

Fault status

⚠️ Status
