Causes

  • Open or high-resistance wiring between PCM and camshaft actuator B (Bank 2)
  • Disconnected, corroded, or damaged connector at the actuator
  • Failed camshaft profile actuator / VVT solenoid (electrical coil open or internal short)
  • Blown fuse or poor power/ground supply to the actuator circuit
  • Short to battery or chassis ground in the control wiring
  • Faulty PCM or poor PCM connector/ground

Symptoms

  • Check Engine Light (MIL) illuminated
  • Reduced engine performance or rough idle under some conditions
  • Possible poor fuel economy
  • Engine may run in default/limp cam timing mode (reduced power)
  • Occasional misfire or hesitation when cam timing incorrect

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data to confirm when code set and related codes
  • Visually inspect actuator connector and wiring on Bank 2 for damage, corrosion, or oil intrusion
  • Check battery voltage at ignition ON and at the actuator connector (11–14 V expected)
  • Measure coil resistance of the actuator with connector unplugged and compare to spec
  • Backprobe control pin while cranking/running to verify PCM command (voltage/PWM) with an oscilloscope or lab scope
  • Check continuity between the actuator control pin and the PCM pin; check for short to battery or ground

Signal parameters

  • Supply voltage at actuator power pin (IGN ON): vehicle battery voltage ≈ 11–14 V
  • Typical actuator coil resistance (varies by design): commonly in the range of about 6–30 ohms — compare to OEM spec
  • Control signal: PCM typically uses a switched ground or PWM drive; command waveform frequency and duty vary by engine load and speed
  • Open-circuit condition: infinite resistance or no continuity between coil and PCM/control pin
  • Short to power: control pin stuck at battery voltage; short to ground: control pin near 0 V

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve freeze frame, related codes and confirm P2B36; note engine conditions when code set.
  2. Visually inspect camshaft actuator B (Bank 2) connector and wiring harness for pin damage, corrosion, oil, or crushed wires; repair as needed.
  3. With connector unplugged, measure actuator coil resistance and compare to OEM spec. If open or out of range, replace actuator.
  4. With ignition ON, verify supply voltage at the actuator power pin. If missing, trace and repair the power feed or fuse/relay.
  5. Backprobe the control pin with engine cranking/ running. Use a lab scope to confirm PCM is commanding (PWM or switching). No command indicates possible PCM/wiring issue.
  6. Check continuity between actuator control pin and PCM control pin; check for shorts to battery or ground. Repair wiring faults as found.
  7. If wiring and actuator test good, swap with same actuator from the other bank (if applicable) to see if code follows actuator. Do not swap if part is electronically different.
  8. Inspect engine oil level/condition; extremely dirty or low oil can affect VVT operation—service if needed.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a driving cycle or functional test to confirm code does not return.
  10. If all wiring and actuator tests pass and code remains, consider PCM/ECM diagnosis or replacement only after confirming PCM power/grounds and connector integrity.

Likely causes

  • Disconnected or damaged actuator connector
  • Failed actuator (coil open/high resistance)
  • Wiring harness chafing or broken conductor to PCM
  • Corroded pins causing intermittent/open circuit

Fault status

⚠️ Status
P2B36 — Camshaft Profile Actuator B Control Circuit/Open (Bank 2). The PCM detected an open or fault in the control circuit for the Bank 2 camshaft actuator; circuit wiring, connector, actuator coil, power/ground, or PCM may be the cause.
