Coolant Pump D Supply Voltage Circuit

Causes

  • Open or short in coolant pump D supply or ground wiring
  • Corroded, loose or damaged connector at the pump
  • Blown fuse or faulty relay for coolant pump circuit
  • Failed coolant pump D (internal short or open)
  • Faulty ECM/PCM output driver or internal circuitry
  • Intermittent wiring damage (chafing, pinched harness)

Symptoms

  • Check engine light (MIL) illuminated
  • Coolant temperature regulation issues (overheat or unexpected temp behavior)
  • Loss of secondary coolant pump operation (reduced circulation)
  • Intermittent operation of coolant pump D or failure to run when commanded
  • Possible unusual noise from pump if partially seized

What to check

  • Read stored freeze-frame and live data with a scan tool; confirm P2B69 is current or historic
  • Visually inspect pump D connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or loose terminals
  • Check related fuse(s) and relay(s) for correct operation
  • Backprobe pump connector and check supply voltage with key ON and while pump is commanded ON
  • Measure resistance of pump motor between supply and ground (compare to service data if available)
  • Perform wiggle test on harness while monitoring voltage and/or DTCs to find intermittent faults

Signal parameters

  • Battery/system supply voltage at pump supply pin: typically ~11–14 V with ignition ON and engine running
  • Control signal (if PWM controlled): 0–100% duty cycle depending on commanded output; frequency varies by manufacturer
  • Expected pump motor DC resistance: low (typically under ~5 Ω depending on pump design) — consult service data
  • Expected current draw while running: moderate (amps vary by pump design); large increases indicate internal short or mechanical bind
  • High resistance or voltage drop at connector under load indicates poor connection

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify and record the code, freeze-frame, and any related codes using a capable OBD scanner.
  2. Inspect visual condition of pump D, connector, and wiring harness for corrosion, water intrusion, or physical damage.
  3. Check fuses and relays for the coolant pump circuit; replace or swap relay with known-good unit if available.
  4. Backprobe the pump connector. With ignition ON but engine as required by procedure, measure supply voltage at the pump supply pin — should be near battery voltage.
  5. Command the pump ON with a scan tool while monitoring supply voltage and control signal. Note voltage drop under load and verify the ECM is sending a control signal (steady or PWM).
  6. Measure pump motor resistance and compare to specification. If open or very high resistance, replace pump. If near short or excessively low, suspect internal fault.
  7. Measure current draw when pump is running. Excessive current indicates mechanical seizure or electrical short; no current indicates open circuit or lost supply/ground.
  8. If supply and pump checks are good, test ECM output driver by checking control signal waveform and comparing to expected. Repair wiring or replace ECM only after confirming wiring and components are good.
  9. Repair or replace damaged wiring, connector, fuse, relay, or pump as indicated. Clear codes and road-test to verify repair; monitor for recurrence.

Likely causes

  • Corroded or loose connector at the pump causing high resistance
  • Open wire between fuse/relay and pump connector
  • Pump motor partially seized or drawing excessive current
  • Failed relay or blown fuse supplying the pump
  • Damaged ECM output transistor or short to power/ground at harness
