Causes

  • Faulty camshaft profile actuator position sensor A (Bank 1)
  • Short circuit to battery voltage on sensor signal wire
  • Open or intermittent wiring, broken conductor, or connector pin pushed out
  • Corroded or loose connector terminals
  • Poor or missing sensor ground or reference (5V) supply
  • Internal failure or seizure of the camshaft profile actuator/solenoid

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) / Check Engine Light illuminated
  • Reduced engine power or limp-home mode (on some vehicles)
  • Rough idle, hesitation, or misfire related to cam timing
  • Poor fuel economy and increased emissions
  • Hard starting or abnormal cam timing events
  • Stored related camshaft/cam timing fault codes

What to check

  • Read and record freeze frame and all stored codes using a scan tool; check for related camshaft/actuator codes
  • Visually inspect sensor connector, harness for damage, rubbing, corrosion, or water entry
  • Backprobe the sensor connector and check for the 5V reference and a solid ground with key on
  • Measure the sensor signal voltage with key ON engine OFF and with engine running; compare to expected range
  • Check for battery voltage on the signal pin (indicates short to B+) and for open circuits
  • Wiggle harness and connectors while monitoring live data for intermittent behavior

Signal parameters

  • Sensor type: typically position potentiometer or hall-effect potentiometer (analog DC voltage output)
  • Reference voltage: ~5 V reference supply from PCM to sensor (verify vehicle spec)
  • Signal voltage: expected within sensor-specific range (commonly ~0.1–4.9 V depending on position); a 'high' fault generally means voltage at or near battery voltage or above expected maximum (e.g., >4.8 V)
  • Ground: good chassis/PCM ground required for correct readings
  • Behavior: steady DC analog voltage that varies with actuator position (no high-frequency pulses)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the code and capture live data/freeze frame. Note operating conditions when the fault set.
  2. Inspect wiring and connector for Bank 1 cam actuator position sensor A for corrosion, bent pins, damage, or water.
  3. With key ON (engine OFF), backprobe the connector: verify 5V reference present, good ground, and check signal pin voltage. Note if signal equals battery voltage (short to B+) or is stuck high.
  4. Start engine and monitor sensor signal while commanding cam actuator (if bi-directional control available) or while varying engine speed; look for sensible changing voltage. Perform a wiggle test on harness/connectors while monitoring.
  5. If signal shows battery voltage on signal pin, isolate wiring for short to B+ (disconnect sensor and re-check); if short persists, trace/repair wiring between sensor and PCM.
  6. If reference or ground is missing or out of spec, trace and repair wiring to PCM, check fuses/relays and grounds.
  7. If wiring and supplies are good but signal is still out of range, replace the camshaft profile actuator position sensor. Re-test and clear codes.
  8. If problem remains after sensor replacement and wiring checks, test PCM input for proper operation or consult OEM resources/TSBs; consider PCM replacement only after all other causes eliminated.
  9. After repair, clear codes and perform a road test/longer drive cycle to confirm fault does not return.

Likely causes

  • Short to battery on the sensor signal wire or internal short in sensor
  • Open or damaged wiring/poor connector contact causing erratic/high reading
  • Failed or degraded position sensor
  • Bad sensor ground or missing 5V reference
  • Actuator mechanical failure that drives the sensor out of range
  • PCM fault (least likely)
