Cylinder 8 Fuel Injector B Offset Learning At Max Limit

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Injector flow rate out of specification (clogged, leaking or worn)
  • Faulty injector driver or ECM output for Injector B circuit
  • High or low fuel rail pressure / feed problem
  • Poor electrical connection or damaged wiring to the injector
  • Mechanical problems on cylinder 8 (low compression, valve issues)
  • Incorrect injector installed or wrong injector characterization

Symptoms

  • Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration, especially at idle or low load
  • Misfire on cylinder 8 (possible stored misfire codes)
  • Higher than normal fuel consumption or uneven running
  • Reduced engine performance or hesitation
  • Possible black smoke from exhaust if overfuelling

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and live data; note learned offset value and related fuel trims
  • Scan for other codes (misfire, injector circuit, fuel trim, fuel pressure)
  • Visual inspection of injector wiring harness and connector for damage/corrosion
  • Measure injector resistance at cylinder 8 and compare with spec and matching injectors
  • Check injector pulse width / duty cycle with a lab scope or scan tool
  • Measure fuel rail pressure and regulator operation under load

Signal parameters

  • Injector pulse width (ms) and commanded duty cycle (%)
  • Learned injector offset value (ECM-specific units or %)
  • Short-term and long-term fuel trims (STFT/LTFT, %)
  • Fuel rail pressure (psi or bar)
  • Injector coil resistance (ohms)
  • Cylinder contribution / balance numbers (fuel/ignition corrections)

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and freeze-frame data with a capable scan tool. Note learned offset and related PIDs.
  2. Visually inspect injector connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, melted insulation or poor grounds.
  3. Measure injector coil resistance and compare to specification and to a known-good injector from another cylinder.
  4. With engine off, swap the suspect injector with a same-type injector from another cylinder and clear codes. Run engine to see if the DTC or running condition follows the injector.
  5. Use a lab scope or scan tool to verify proper injector drive waveform and pulse width while cranking/running. Check for irregularities or missing pulses.
  6. Check fuel rail pressure under static and dynamic conditions and confirm regulator/pump/filter are within spec.
  7. Perform cylinder contribution or power balance test to quantify fuel delivery effect; perform compression or leak-down test to exclude mechanical issues.
  8. If wiring or driver issues suspected, back-probe the injector connector to check voltage supply and ground/driver signals; check for high resistance in circuit and parasitic voltage drops.
  9. If injector swaps and bench tests indicate defective injector, replace or professionally flow-test/clean injector and then clear learned offsets.
  10. After repair or replacement, perform ECM relearn/reset of injector offsets per manufacturer procedure and verify learned values return to expected range and that no DTC returns.
  11. If injector and wiring check good but learned offset remains at limit, consider ECM/software fault and follow manufacturer guidance for ECM reflash or replacement.

Likely causes

  • Injector for Cylinder 8 (Bank B) is partially clogged or leaking causing flow difference
  • Open/short/high resistance in injector harness or connector at cylinder 8
  • Fuel rail pressure low due to pump, regulator or filter problem altering injector pulse adaptation
  • Injector driver transistor in ECM weak or failing
  • Cylinder 8 combustion/mechanical issue (low compression) causing the ECM to compensate beyond limits

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Cylinder 8 Fuel Injector B offset learning reached max limit — ECM cannot compensate further. Inspect injector, wiring, fuel and engine mechanical condition.
