Causes

  • Open or short in the generator/alternator voltage sense circuit B wiring
  • Poor or corroded battery or alternator B+ connections
  • High resistance or intermittent connector at alternator sense terminal or PCM/ECM connector
  • Failed alternator internal regulator or sense input
  • Weak, sulfated or failing battery affecting sensing
  • Blown fusible link, charging system fuse, or faulty relay

Symptoms

  • Battery or charging system warning light illuminated
  • Battery not charging or low battery voltage while running
  • Erratic or high charging voltage (overcharging) or low charging voltage (undercharging)
  • Dim or flickering lights and electrical accessories
  • Difficult starting, frequent jump-starts required
  • Stored or intermittent drivability issues if vehicle enters limp mode

What to check

  • Retrieve freeze frame and live data with a scan tool; confirm P2CC2 is active or stored and note conditions (engine rpm, battery voltage, load)
  • Visually inspect battery terminals, cable ends, alternator B+ and sense connectors for corrosion, looseness, or damage
  • Check charging fuse/fusible link and any related relays
  • Measure battery resting voltage (engine off) and charging voltage (engine running) at the battery posts
  • Backprobe alternator sense/B+ terminal with a multimeter; compare to battery positive voltage
  • Perform a voltage drop test between alternator B+/sense terminal and battery positive under load

Signal parameters

  • Battery voltage (engine off): approximately 12.4–12.8 V for a healthy battery
  • Charging voltage (engine idling): typically 13.5–14.8 V (may vary by vehicle)
  • Sense circuit voltage should closely match battery positive (voltage drop ideally < 0.5 V under load)
  • Voltage ripple on charging output: low, typically < 1.0 V peak-to-peak; excessive ripple may indicate alternator diode or regulator issues
  • Signal range for detection: sense circuit expected within system supply range (0–16 V); out-of-range or highly unstable readings can set the code

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify code: Connect a scan tool, confirm P2CC2, record freeze frame and live data (battery voltage, engine RPM, electrical load).
  2. Visual inspection: With ignition off, inspect battery, cables, alternator connectors, fuses/fusible links and grounds for corrosion or damage.
  3. Battery test: Measure battery open-circuit voltage and perform a load or conductance test to ensure battery health; replace if weak.
  4. Measure voltages: Start engine, measure voltage at battery positive and alternator B+/sense terminal at idle and with electrical load (headlights, blower). Note differences.
  5. Voltage drop test: Under load, measure voltage drop between alternator B+/sense terminal and battery positive. Excessive drop suggests wiring or connection resistance.
  6. Wiring and continuity: With power off, check continuity and insulation between alternator sense terminal and PCM/ECM sense input and battery positive. Check for shorts to ground or 12V.
  7. Connector and pin checks: Inspect and wiggle connectors while monitoring live voltage for intermittent faults.
  8. Alternator bench or functional test: If wiring and battery check good, test alternator/regulator on the vehicle or bench to verify internal regulator and sense input operation.
  9. PCM/ECM checks: If alternator and wiring test good, inspect PCM power/grounds and test/replace PCM only after other causes eliminated.
  10. Clear DTC and retest: Repair any issues found, clear codes, and verify the charging system operates correctly and the code does not return during a road test under varied loads.
  11. Safety note: Take care when working near spinning belts and electrical terminals. Isolate high-current circuits when performing continuity or resistance checks.

Likely causes

  • Loose or corroded battery positive or alternator B+ terminal
  • Damaged or chafed sense wire (open or short to ground/12V)
  • High resistance at connector or inline splice on sense circuit
  • Failing alternator/regulator with defective sense input

Fault status

⚠️ Status
Generator voltage sense circuit B is outside the expected range or performing poorly. The charging system voltage sensed by circuit B is abnormal.
