Page language: EN

Causes

  • Blown fuse or tripped protection device in control supply
  • Open or shorted wiring in the contactor C control circuit
  • Poor/ corroded connector or pin contact
  • Faulty negative contactor C (coil or internal driver failure)
  • Powertrain control module / charging module driver fault
  • Low 12 V auxiliary battery or weak HV system auxiliary supply

Symptoms

  • Charging disabled or reduced charging rate
  • HV battery charge state not changing / slow or no charge
  • Charge-system warning light or CEL (battery/charging warning)
  • Vehicle may enter limp mode or limit functionality
  • Audible click or no click from contactor when charge is commanded
  • Related DTCs for other contactors or charging circuit faults

What to check

  • Read freeze frame and related DTCs; record conditions when code set
  • Verify 12 V battery (auxiliary) and HV system voltages are within spec
  • Visually inspect contactor C, harness, connectors and fuses for damage/corrosion
  • Back-probe/control-pin voltage with key/charger commanded ON and OFF
  • Check coil resistance of contactor C and compare to manufacturer spec
  • Check continuity between ECU/charger control output and contactor connector

Signal parameters

  • Expected control voltage: ~12 V (or manufacturer-specified supply) when contactor is commanded ON; ~0 V when OFF. Fault reported when measured voltage is significantly below expected (e.g.,
  • Contactor coil resistance: varies by design — typically in the low ohms (example 0.5–5 Ω). Consult service manual for exact value.
  • Contactor coil current: typically 1–10 A while energized depending on design — check manufacturer spec
  • Driver output may be PWM or switched ground; verify waveform and duty as per service data
  • Reference voltages and ground integrity must be within spec for correct control-signal readings

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve all related codes and freeze-frame data. Note charge state and conditions when code set.
  2. Clear codes and attempt to reproduce. Monitor whether code returns and under what conditions.
  3. Verify auxiliary 12 V battery and charger supply voltages are within spec. Replace or charge as needed.
  4. Visually inspect contactor C, connector pins, harness routing and protective tubing for damage, corrosion, or water intrusion.
  5. With the system OFF, disconnect contactor connector and measure coil resistance. Compare to spec. An open or shorted coil indicates contactor replacement.
  6. With harness connected, back-probe the control pin at the contactor while commanding the contactor ON. Measure voltage/current. If voltage is low (
  7. If control voltage absent at contactor but present at ECU output pin, inspect wiring between ECU and contactor for high resistance or opens. If absent at ECU output, test driver output pin per manufacturer procedure (bench test or scope).
  8. Apply an external, fused 12 V supply to the contactor coil (bench or vehicle test following safety procedures) to verify mechanical operation. Do not bypass safety interlocks on HV systems.
  9. If contactor operates with external supply and wiring/circuit check OK, suspect ECU/charger driver module. If contactor fails to operate with proper supply, replace contactor.
  10. After repairs, clear codes, perform functional tests and a full system charge/discharge verification. Re-scan for pending codes.

Likely causes

  • Damaged connector or harness at contactor C (water, corrosion, chafing)
  • Short to ground on the contactor control feed causing low measured voltage
  • Failed contactor coil (open or shorted)
  • Faulty charger/ECU driver transistor output stage
  • Blown control-side fuse or poor ground at ECU
