Causes

  • Open or shorted wiring in the exhaust pressure sensor C circuit

What to check

  • Scan for freeze frame data and live exhaust pressure sensor C values with a diagnostic tool
  • Visually inspect sensor, connector, and wiring for damage, corrosion, or disconnection
  • Backprobe the sensor connector and check reference voltage, signal voltage, and ground
  • Inspect the sensor pressure port and any vacuum/pressure hoses for blockage or leaks
  • Wiggle test wiring and connector while monitoring live data for intermittent changes
  • Compare readings to a known-good sensor or to the other exhaust pressure sensors (if present)

Signal parameters

  • Typical sensor supply (reference) voltage: ~5.0 V (varies by manufacturer)
  • Expected signal output: approximately 0.5–4.5 V across operating pressure range (0–max rated pressure); consult vehicle data for exact scale
  • Expected sensor impedance: manufacturer-specific; often several kilo-ohms for piezoresistive sensors
  • Response characteristic: smooth proportional change in voltage with changing exhaust pressure; no sudden jumps or flatlines
  • Short to battery or short to ground will show near 5.0 V or near 0 V respectively on signal line

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Record freeze frame and live data for exhaust pressure sensor C. Note voltage/value at key engine conditions (idle, spool, load).
  2. Perform a visual inspection of the sensor, connector, and harness. Repair any chafing, corrosion, or pin damage.
  3. With ignition ON (engine OFF), backprobe the sensor connector: verify reference voltage (~5 V) and ground circuit continuity to chassis ground. Replace/repair if out of specification.
  4. Measure sensor signal voltage with engine running while changing engine load. Signal should vary smoothly with exhaust pressure. If signal is stuck, shorted, or erratic, suspect sensor or wiring.
  5. If accessible, blow-clean the sensor pressure port or tubing and check for blockages; reconnect and retest.
  6. If wiring and connectors check good, disconnect sensor and measure its output or resistance per manufacturer procedure, or substitute a known-good sensor to confirm failure.
  7. If tests indicate intermittent faults, perform wiggle tests on harness while monitoring live data to locate breaks.
  8. If wiring and sensor both appear good but code persists, check ECM input for shorts and consult manufacturer technical service information for module diagnostics.
  9. After repairs, clear codes and perform a drive cycle / test to verify that P2E55 does not return.
