Cylinder 4 Alternative Fuel Misfire Detected

Brand: Generic

Page language: EN

Causes

  • Faulty ignition on cylinder 4 (coil, spark plug, plug lead)
  • Injector or alternative-fuel injector failure or blockage on cylinder 4
  • Low compression or mechanical issue in cylinder 4 (valve, piston, head gasket)
  • Fuel delivery problem specific to alternative fuel system (pressure regulator, vaporizer/mixer, injectors)
  • Fuel quality or incorrect fuel/air ratio for the conversion system
  • Wiring or connector fault to injector or ignition component on cylinder 4

Symptoms

  • MIL/Check Engine lamp illuminated
  • Rough idle or vibration, especially at idle
  • Reduced engine power and hesitation on acceleration
  • Increased fuel consumption and visible smoke on some fuels
  • Misfire counts present in freeze frame/live data for cylinder 4
  • Possible difficulty starting or stalling under load

What to check

  • Read and record DTC P2E5C and any additional stored codes; save freeze-frame and live data
  • Monitor misfire counters and crankshaft speed variation for cylinder 4 on a scan tool
  • Inspect spark plug, coil/ignition lead, and replace if fouled or damaged
  • Swap ignition coil or spark plug with another cylinder to see if misfire follows
  • Inspect and test injector/nozzle (or alternative-fuel injector) for spray pattern, resistance and operation; swap with another cylinder if practical
  • Measure fuel rail/alternative-fuel system pressure and compare to spec

Signal parameters

  • Misfire counter / cylinder contribution (counts per minute or misfire events)
  • Crankshaft speed variation signal (degrees crank/N-tooth irregularity)
  • Short term and long term fuel trim (%)
  • O2/AFR sensor voltage or A/F ratio (0.1–0.9 V for narrowband; target AFR for wideband)
  • Fuel rail pressure (psi or bar) — alternative-fuel system pressure where applicable
  • Injector pulse width (ms) and injector current/driver status

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Verify the fault: confirm P2E5C is current or stored, record freeze-frame and live data, and note operating conditions when the fault set (fuel type, load, temperature).
  2. Visual inspection: examine cylinder 4 spark plug, coil/lead, injector/nozzle, and wiring for obvious damage, carbon fouling, or fuel contamination. Repair as needed.
  3. Basic swap test: swap the ignition coil and/or injector from cylinder 4 with another cylinder. If the misfire follows the component, replace the faulty part.
  4. Fuel system check: measure alternative-fuel supply/rail pressure and regulator function; verify injector/nozzle spray pattern and operation. Repair or clean/replace injectors or conversion components as required.
  5. Compression/leak-down: perform static compression and/or leak-down test on cylinder 4 and compare to adjacent cylinders. Investigate mechanical repair if compression is out of spec.
  6. Electrical inspection: test injector and coil circuits for voltage, ground, continuity and short to battery; check PCM driver outputs. Repair wiring or connectors found faulty.
  7. Intake/air leaks and timing: check for vacuum leaks, intake manifold gasket issues and verify ignition timing/valve timing if applicable to the conversion system.
  8. Reproduce and verify: clear codes and road test on the same alternative fuel. Monitor misfire counters, fuel trims and O2/AFR. If issue persists, consult conversion-system supplier or dealer resources for software calibration or module replacement.
  9. If all tests pass and fault remains intermittent, perform extended drive-cycle data logging and consider replacing suspect components (coil, injector) or further module-level diagnosis.

Likely causes

  • Faulty ignition coil or spark plug on cylinder 4
  • Clogged or failed injector/alternative-fuel nozzle for cylinder 4
  • Low compression in cylinder 4 (worn rings, valve seating, head gasket)
  • Wiring/connector fault at the cylinder 4 injector or coil
  • Incorrect alternative-fuel pressure or regulator malfunction

Fault status

⚠️ Status
