Page language: EN

Causes

  • Ignition fault on cylinder 6 (worn/failed spark plug, ignition coil, coil pack or lead)
  • Fuel delivery problem specific to cylinder 6 (stuck/failed alternative-fuel injector/valve or feed line)
  • Low compression or mechanical issue in cylinder 6 (worn rings, leaking valve, head gasket)
  • Lean or rich condition affecting cylinder 6 due to air leak, regulator failure, or incorrect fuel composition
  • Faulty wiring or connector to injector or ignition primary/secondary for cylinder 6
  • Alternative-fuel system component failure (pressure regulator, vaporizer, switch-over solenoid, fuel quality sensor)

Symptoms

  • Check Engine lamp (MIL) illuminated
  • Engine rough idle or vibration, especially at idle or light load
  • Loss of power, hesitation or stumbling under acceleration
  • Poor fuel economy and increased emissions
  • Occasional hard start or extended cranking when cold on alternative fuel
  • Possible audible backfire or popping on intake/exhaust (in some cases)

What to check

  • Read PCM freeze frame and pending/stored DTCs; note fuel type, fuel system status, engine load and RPM when code set
  • Scan for related codes (fuel trim, O2 sensors, crank/cam, fuel system faults)
  • Monitor live data: cylinder 6 misfire counter, short/long‑term fuel trim, O2 signals, fuel rail/regulator pressure (alternative-fuel specific)
  • Visually inspect spark plug, coil, injector, wiring harness and connectors for cylinder 6
  • Perform a compression or cylinder leakage test on cylinder 6 and compare to other cylinders
  • Check alternative-fuel system: supply pressure, regulator/vaporizer operation, filters, solenoids and fuel composition sensor if equipped

Signal parameters

  • Cylinder 6 misfire counter: non-zero and differs from other cylinders when fault present
  • Short-term fuel trim (STFT) and long-term fuel trim (LTFT): significant positive or negative deviation (> +/-10%)
  • O2/HEGO sensor voltages: erratic or stuck lean/rich (typical switching ~0.1–0.9 V on gasoline-style sensors)
  • Alternative-fuel rail/regulator pressure: stable and within manufacturer spec (compare to other cylinders/load conditions)
  • Injector pulse width/duty cycle for cylinder 6: abnormal or missing events
  • Ignition primary/secondary waveforms for cylinder 6: weak or absent spark, unusual dwell/current

Diagnostic algorithm

  1. Retrieve DTCs and freeze-frame data; confirm vehicle operating on alternative fuel during code occurrence.
  2. Clear codes and road test to reproduce; record misfire counters and fuel system data with a scan tool.
  3. Inspect spark plug and coil for cylinder 6; replace or swap with a known-good unit to see if code follows.
  4. Inspect and test the alternative-fuel injector/valve for cylinder 6: check electrical continuity, resistance, and operation (use a scope or noid light where appropriate).
  5. Check alternative-fuel supply: verify regulator/vaporizer output, fuel rail pressure, filters and solenoids. Confirm fuel composition sensor (E85 sensor) if equipped is reading correctly.
  6. Perform a compression test and/or cylinder leak-down test on cylinder 6 and compare to adjacent cylinders; repair mechanical issues if found.
  7. Use an oscilloscope or secondary ignition tester to verify healthy ignition secondary waveform and correct spark energy on cylinder 6.
  8. Check for intake manifold leaks or vacuum leaks near cylinder 6, and inspect wiring harness and connectors for corrosion or damage.
  9. Swap the injector and/or coil between cylinder 6 and another cylinder (if allowed by manufacturer) and retest to determine if fault follows component.
  10. If tests point to sensors, verify crank/cam sensor signals and update PCM software or apply manufacturer technical service bulletins if available.
  11. After repairs, clear codes and perform a prolonged drive cycle on the alternative fuel to verify the misfire monitor completes and the code does not return.

Likely causes

  • Faulty ignition coil or spark plug on cylinder 6
  • Faulty or clogged alternative-fuel injector/valve or inadequate local fuel pressure
  • Cylinder 6 compression loss or mechanical defect
  • Lean condition from alternative-fuel regulator/pressure problem or air leak near intake for cylinder 6
  • Wiring/connectors to injector or coil for cylinder 6

Fault status

⚠️ Status
